Hi everyone, I'm new to your site, so first of all, thanks for having me, and secondly, I hope Im posting this in the right place.
Having been on the lookout for some time for a diesel auto estate, I am now the proud owner of a 2002 rover 75 estate. I have only had the car for a few days ,so im going to get it int a local mechanic later this week to give it a general once over, however before I do that I would like a little advice if possible,so here goes!
1. Are there any things that I should pay particular attention to on this model, for example the plenums ,which I only found out about on here. (checked and clear, assuming theres only two !) most vehicles have there own particular weakness, so any pointers as to what to check would be great !
2. Fuel consumption seem high, showing about 24 mpg round town. is this normal, if not any ideas please?
3. Witter detachable towbar fitted, however the detachable bit is nowhere to be found. contacted a few local places, but no success.Can anyone point me in the right direction, or if anyone has one from an old vehicle, I would be happy to buy it.
Thankyou all in advance. John.

Hi and Welcome, rightly or wrongly my clutch needs to go almost to the floor to change gear and 'bites' almost half way up. I have heard if it bites low down on the floor there is a clutch issue. MPG wise, there are many things detrimental to economy. The 'o' rings at the base of the large hose to the right of the radiator are a common fault, usually evident by an oil covering in that position, a relatively easy fix. The pcv filter at the back of the engine on the top will probably need changing, again, not a bad job. The EGR valve blocks up too, can be changed to a bypass or cleaned. Also, the usual, air and pollen filter may need changing too. Fuel economy is of course hampered by the usual low tyre pressure, binding brakes and poor wheel alignment. My diesel does around 40-42 around town. There you go, lots to ponder, all easily fixed by looking up the how to's by members and reading the boards, others will post things I've missed best of luck. :}

When you say there's only two Plenums I take it you meen the ones in the wings but there is more. The main one to check is under the front window scuttle panel were the ecu is take the plastic trim off and give it a good rodding if it floods in there you drowned your ecu which you don't really want:shrug:

Witter detachable towbar fitted, however the detachable bit is nowhere to be found.

Have you checked the spare wheel well? If it was properly cared for it'll be in a black pouch with a drawstring. Just a thought..

If not, would this fit?

Hello John and :welcome: to the club.

You may have inherited a misleading average. 'Zero' the readout, then keep an eye on it over the coming weeks, or better still do a brim-to-brim calculation.

Hi Simon, I have zeroed the mpg display, and having only driven about 20 miles since then, it is now showing 24 mpg, is this to soon to judge?
By the way Thankyou !

Thanks for the reply, checked everywhere, but it's not there. I have tried eBay but they're not the same fitting, I'll just keep looking !

Hello John and welcome to the 'Club'! It's always nice to see another Member from around Southampton.... Not enough of us on here although there are loads of 75's and ZT's around...!!!

I'm afraid I know very little about the Diesel motor as I have a V6, sorry, but I have heard they can be heavy on juice around town and in cold weather - this should improve a lot on long journeys though.

Cheers for now and enjoy the ride!

And don't forget photo's, WE LOVE PHOTO'S!!! :D

Low mpg and sluggishness around town could be due to the MAF SENSOR. You can disconnect the Maf and see if it makes any difference.

If you reset the trip computer it usually shows a high figure for mpg until it settles down, something like 70 mpg. Only nearer true after considerable miles of differing types of driving. As said, a brim to brim check is best, but if it shows 24 from the outset then something's wrong I would guess :shrug:

Lets establish the facts first. ref fuel consumption:- Do a brim to brim test of at least 100 miles and report back please. :}
The plenum box runs right across the car under the windscreen, the two small indents near the bonnet supports are not part of it.. Take the plastic mesh cover off on the drivers side and shine a torch down to see if you have any water in there, then read the how-to and clean it out.. :)

This is the location of the Main Plenum to which James is referring....

This is also where the Pollen Filter is located - these usually requiring changing annually. I fit the Carbon Activated type, but there are cheaper ones available.

Hi John, welcome to the club. All the information and assistance you're likely to need to can be found at the best 75 & ZT resource around!

An accurate mpg can only be calculated by brim to brim tests of course. However, if I reset my mpg and drive around town it will hover around 34, increasing to 40-odd following a long run.
If you reset before a longer run it can wizz up to 48mpg :D but will settle later to around 38-42.

Hi There, and another welcome. Are you sure the towbar is a Witter? I have a 'Towsure' one fitted and it's a different fitting to the Witter. Just a suggestion!
