Not much gains to be had using fully synthetic unless the engine has used the version from new. You could stick to the viscosity in the handbook, or use the BMW later specification, the choice is yours.

As for the oil brand, the best you can afford.

This is from the Handbook. The important things are the ACEA parameters. Any semi-synthetic will comply with these nowadays. The viscosity seems a free for all for diesels. Lower numbers give lower starting loads in winter.

You'll get as many brand recommendations as people you ask. From A to Z in fact

No wonder there is some confusion over which viscosity of oil to use in the diesel engine. In my hand book it states that you can use 10/40 OR 15/40 ACEA A3/B3.. Did they change the way they manufactured the engine? (closer tolerances). All i will say is, my friend who has a diesel connie cdt 2001 uses Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic, and i use Castrol Magnatec 10/40 in my cdt club.. We both use our cars more or less for the same kind of journeys, i.e. short journeys. When we go abroad we always use mine, he does not like driving "on the wrong side of the road" None of the engines use any oil between oil changes, and mine, even round the houses, does more mpg than his.. Just filled up, first time this year, 238.3 miles,26.79 ltrs= 5.89 gallons=40.46 mpg. This is much better than this time last year in the freezing cold.
So you takes your pick and pay your money.

Nor surprised they're out of stock at the moment, as I can't see how they can supply and deliver it for the money!
