Since I bought the car four years ago it has done 147,000 miles and gone through six bottom pulleys.
I bought the car on 62,000 and did the first replacement at about 79,000. I don't know if this was the first time or not as there was little history other than the service stamps in the book. The pulley that was changed today had done roughly 55,000 miles. The others were AA specified replacements that lasted between 10,000 & 15,000 miles each.

I have read about the cheap ones which is why the better ones are now being fitted hence the longer life.

My question is, is it normal for the pulley to need replacing every 50 to 60 thousand miles or does this indicate a more serious problem?

Mine has done 155000 and is still on the OEM as far as I know. It is the one item I need to replace "just in case".

183,000 on mine before it needed doing, 50,000 sounds low. Corteco pulleys seem the best replacement for about £100 each.

Fit a decent item from another brand - they should last longer than that.
Unfortunately a lot of "**** Approved" parts have just paid to have that label as a marketing gimmick.

I have them starting from £99.99 inc P+P, and haven't had one fail. Ever. :)

My car's done 235K, I've owned it for 150K of those. I'm fairly certain it was original when it came to me and it still is.
