Auto dimming rear view mirror

I know this has been posted on here before but not for the question I am asking (I think)

I have a 2001 75 cdt conn se and what I would like to know is how to test the mirror, it has a light sensor in a clear spot on the glass and also a sensor on the back (facing forwards) I have tried shining a light into the sensor in the mirror glass and also on the sensor facing forwards but nothing seems to happen there is as far as I can see no dimming at all, any thoughts?

stick your finger over the front lens.this bit tells it is dark.and shine a torch in the sensor on the glass
