View Full Version : Inlet manifold gasket??

Hello,

Could smoke on cold start up be caused by a knackered inlet manifold gasket? The pipe from the air intake etc has popped off a couple of times recently and when I've put it back on, I've seen there's a fair amount of black/dirty looking oil inside it.

Could the gasket be the cause of all my problems??

What colour smoke?

What colour smoke?

Blue/white. Goes when engines warm.

Ok that's oil being burnt, so it could be, turbo seals, valve stem seals or piston rings worn, a lot depends on how long it takes to stop smoking.

Garage thinks it's the valve stem seals. But would that cause oil in the pipe to the inlet manifold?
And it only smokes for a couple of minutes.

The breather pipes feed back into the inlet so there will always be a small amount of oil residue present.

Oh right. The only reason I'm skeptical about it being the valve stems is that there's no smoke when it's warm on the over run. And there would be, wouldn't there?

The oil leaks past them when cold and gets burnt off, they warm up and then seal again until the engine is cold.

No, not necessarily.

So would you both say it's the valve stems? But what explains the pipe popping off the inlet manifold on hard acceleration. Wouldn't the inlet manifold gasket going cause excess pressure etc? I'm really at a complete loss as to what it is.
