Recently my local Rover/MG specialist advised me that checking the timing on a Rover V6 (been having performance/rev issues so thinking of different options) would cost near enough as much as changing the belts from scratch. Is this true?

If I remember correctly, you do have to remove a fair bit to do it 'properly' as the front pulleys aren't keyed - they're set with the tools.
I'd go with an ignition fault first. :)

If the timing was out a few teeth there would have been a big crunch and zt would be no more. there is no room for error on the timing on the kv6. Like mat said check other things vis motors has the inlet got the death rattle. Have you got a misfire. Get it on a t4 mite give you the answers.
