Went shopping last night and filled up with fuel.
On the way back from shopping noticed a whiff of petrol in the car and switched the air con off, all seemed normal otherwise.
Got in the car this morning, turns over normally but not firing.
I can hear the fuel pump whirring away so I presume that is ok.
Going to investigate the FOC I've read about in the past otherwise I'm stumped!
Any ideas folks would be most welcome:bowdown:

Got a chap coming this morning to have an audio install done and then out at the cat rescue ( will take the Audi I guess ) so not quite sure when I'll get a chance to take a look at it but will take on board all suggestions:}

Thanks Steve,

Going to thoroughly check the plenum drain under the scuttle and make sure that is clear but other than that I'm going to guess this is a fuel ( or lack of ) related issue.

P.s there is three quarters of a tank in there;)

Could be anything, get a diagnostics tool on it .

Yep, but if I can check some obvious things first before getting my garage out its worth a go;)

You're on the right lines with this Jeff. Remember not to dismantle the filter; just check for tightness. We await your further report.

Sorry to hear of your issue Jeff, have you got breakdown cover, only if it's AA or RAC I believe they carry a generic diagnostic tool which might at least eliminate some of the guesswork.
At least you have SDItoo on board now, he will get to the bottom of it:bowdown:

Fuel Filter Sundrome would be my first port of call too.

As said, get the seat base lifted up and check the filter housing hasn't loosened off. You shouldn't however have a fuel smell with the housing coming loose as it's still inside the tank.

On a petrol car, with no obvious leaks and a petrol smell, I would be looking at the lack of a spark to ignite the fuel.

FFS is the number 1 cause of a sudden non-start condition in later petrol models. However, it doesn't cause a petrol smell (unless the tank seal isn't refitted correctly), so lack of sparks does seem a likely cause. Both need checking and if there's no FOC in place, then fit one. Without it, FFS can let you down anytime anywhere.

Just an idea to throw into the pot - If there is no spark, might it be the cam/crank position sensor which has failed?

Check in the Engine Bay Fusebox for a 15amp fuse.If it blows the engine will turn over but wo'nt fire.

Hi all,

Just finished doing the customer ice install.
Just to add, the smell of fuel was on the way home last night after leaving the garage.
There is no smell of fuel whatsoever this morning so maybe it was just some spilt fuel on the garage forecourt that I drove through and a bit of a red herring!

I think the orange clip seems to be the favourite culprit.
Unfortunatly it is now monsooning it down here with thunder and lightning so I don't think I'll be able to do anything today....It's horrid out there:eek:

I will probably have to get my Garage to take a look tomorrow as I haven't got a day off this week to do it myself.
I'll let you know what the end result is and thanks once again all

Be careful Jeff. Your garage won't know about the fuel filter syndrome so will probably want to replace the fuel pump or even tell you that your head gasket's gone! ;)
I'd urge you not to authorise any work until you've consulted us on the forum.

Yes, they're all suspects. It's a matter of ticking off the check list. FFS is top, followed by the sensors. However, the petrol fumes now seem to have been extraneous.

Morning all,
Dropped the key off at the Garage this morning.
Told Mark the symptoms and like you guys his first comment was 'Probably the Fuel Filter':}
I'll let you know later today hopefully, fingers crossed!

I know,

I had to slum it in the Audi this morning :getmecoat:

Edit...............

Garage have just phoned to let me know the car is all done and it was indeed the Fuel Filter moving thingy.
It has been fitted with the clip and should now be trouble free.

Many thanks all for your help and advice.
I'm now a Happy Camper again.
