On my way home this morning my ipk display briefly displayed charge fault ( in red) also the battery light showed too
This happened a couple of times as I say only briefly.
Had a butchers under the bonnet and the belts are in good condition and don't appear to be slipping.
Is this likely to be the start of alternator failure ?

More likely worn alternator brushes Chris. Easy enough to do with the alternator in situ - here is a good 'How To' from David Lawrence mate.

I've done this, and while it's a bit fiddly it's certainly something I'd do again (but hopefully won't be needing to).
The regulator pack you'll need to change is available here:
75/ZT CDTi Regulator Pack (http://www.dmgrs.co.uk/collections/electrical-electronic-parts/products/rover-75-mg-zt-cdti-alternator-regulator-and-brush-kit-fits-yle000260-and-yle102500)

I have them here ready to drop in the post if you need one. :)

I had exactly that a couple of years back ..

just a quick flash of the icons on occasions.

Found my original battery had a duff Cell, Ok in the Summer but struggled in the cold .

new Bosch in and its never appeared again .

I had this myself a few weeks ago.

A new set of brushes cured it for me.
Since it happened I have bought some more spare brushes.
I am not a million miles from you and you are welcome to a set if you want to try that first.
As previous poster said it is not a bad job, just be carefully not to drop any of the nuts.
I followed the how to linked to in above post and it was pretty straightforward.
Good luck.

I also replaced my regulator using DMGR's regulator and David's how to. Didn't work for me though.

Update on this is the fault turns out to be intermittent on my way home yesterday the light flickered all the way but never remained permanently on.
Yet last nite and this morning on my commute to work and back home it never showed once !
The obd via the ipk is showing a charge rate on idle flickering around 13.8 and 13.9 whilst on the move it flickers between 13.9 to 14.1.
Myself and Brian will try a new set of brushes at the weekend and see where that takes us to :D

I had similar problems you are experiencing, and tried in total 3 alternators, two batteries, and two new voltage regulators.

All produced correct voltage, all charged the battery, and still the charge light remained on.

Even though the wiring that was supposed to extinguish the battery light, showed continuity, and when fed 12v direct did indeed extinguish the lamp, when just left alone, it persisted.

Then I discovered the feed from the FBH temp switch was corroded out of sight, and intermittently shorting to earth keeping the light on.

If your new brushes don't cure it , have a look here :-
