View Full Version : Diesel dripping!

So... I was checking out the engine bay today, and saw a dripping off the front of the engine block down near where the dipstick fits into the sump.

Got a sample from my fingers, and it stinks of diesel.

What could be leaking to cause it to drip there?

I thought the HP Pump was off to the left?

Many thanks, things are starting to stress me out now.

Difficult to diagnose but leaking fuel is most likely to be the HP fuel pump

Very restricted space to access diesel pump. Does anybody have advise on how to approach diesel pump replacement or are any special tools required

Cheers guys.

Had another look today, and the back of the pump is literally weeing out diesel.

Sat at idle it pours out, but interestingly enough, just revving it for 20 secs or so all the dripping stopped.

Still, its an observation, not a fix.

There is a 'how to' if you do a search. Yes you do need a special tool - it holds the camshaft intermediate gear in place whilst you remove and refit the pump.

There are two timing chains, one going from the crank to the gear wheel on the fuel pump drive shaft and the other from that gear wheel to the camshafts.

Having seen the same on a friend's 75, I can confirm that will be the HP pump. Replacing the seals isn't too bad of a job, but if you're after a brand-new item we have them, but they're not cheap:
HP Fuel Pump - Genuine Bosch - R75 / MG ZT CDT (http://www.dmgrs.co.uk/products/r75-mg-zt-hp-fuel-injection-pump-msr100320)

Sit down before opening the link! :D
To be honest, a second hand pump is the way I'd go. Failure is fairly rare.

Hi Ross.
Have you checked that it is not just leaking from the regulator part of the pump, as the O-rings can split and if so can be an easy fix with these below

And you will not have to fork out for one of these below, but personally I would drop sean a Pm or one of the other traders and see if they have one going

There are five available from here also

It seems to be dripping from right at the back, one of the lobes thats closest to the engine block.

if it was the regulator Im sure I could see it dripping from the front?

It seemed a lot futher back than that....

The amount was unreal, it must have leaked what looked like the best part of half a litre over 10 mins.

There are other seals on the pump that can let go - I'd go down the second-hand pump route if the source is unclear. :)

You can pick up a new one from ECP for around £350-£400.

It's worthy of mention the ECP pumps are reconditioned units. :)

They are, but they are refurbished by Bosch. Mine looked brand new.

Or spend £18 and a couple of hours with the original pump ;)
