Hi all,

Last week i was towing an unbracked 750kg trailer, the engine started to judder and within a few miles power dropped big time and would not make it uphill.

Lucky i have AA relay. The chap diagnosed blocked EGR. I have to admit i had never heard of it before. Plugged in his computer and said all readings were fine.

He said he could fix it to get me home. He scooped out by hand some crud in the EGR and reajusted some things with his computer and it worked. Off i went but after a few miles it started it again and i carried on driving for another 4 miles just making it uphills until it eventually died.

Had recovery thankfully. It will not start at all now. I will clean out the EGR. Anything else i should clean out as i am concerned the crud has gone through other parts? Also what product is best to clean it with. One chap said oven cleaner?

Cheers, Pearcey

Hi Clive.
Try unplugging the MAF sensor and see if it runs any better, if so this can indicate that the MAF is faulty and may need replacing.

A few things to check and a few jobs that you could do also, first check the O-rings at the bottom of the EGR hose attached to the intercooler, these could well need changing use Viton ones, these can be obtained from Jules a trader on here.

Clean out the EGR with carb cleaner wear gloves and use lots of rags make sure you do not get any cleaning fluid in to the end of the open tube of the EGR.

You can also clean the manifold use oven cleaner for this and jet wash it out, but make sure you remove the MAP sensor attached to it first, MAP sensor can be cleaned with carb cleaner again do not spray directly into the tiny sensor hole.

Change the PCV filter and air filter also fuel filter, also check the plenums to see if they have water ingress, below are a few links for you to read.

After trying some of these refer back to the forum and lets us know, or ask some more questions.

I would also look at getting the 160 Upgrade for your car ;)

Hi Steve,

Many thanks indeed. I will attempt it all very soon. Laid up all week ill. My MPG has been dropping and it has been a bit sluggish pulling away. Had the plenum disaster a few years back as a new owner but thanks to this great forum sorted it out.

Will check it again as well. It runs great normally and is a pleasure to drive. Everyone who gets in it comments on the luxury drive, even my son in law who is anti rover. :twonk:

Will keep you all informed and thanks again.

Clive.

An injector not working correctly can cause the sort of cutting out you've had or even a fuel pump problem.

Also, check that both fuel pumps are working.
check and clean the connections on top of the under bonnet pump, as well as those going onto the fuel rail (just behind the EGR).

I'd suspect either injector leakback, a crank sensor or a fuel supply issue (fuel pumps etc). :)

Cheers, the list is growing and it all helps. I will get on it next week and have a go myself.
Thanks to you all.

If i fit a EGR bypass does the ECU need telling about it? I think the AA guy did something to the EGR, then plugged his computer in to the ECU and input something? I should of asked but it was 4am and i was knackered and hacked off !
