View Full Version : Cooling fan resistor?

I’ve just realised I may have this fault – since I’ve owned the car (4˝ years), people have remarked on the very loud fan, which bursts into life every so often. I keep the aircon on all the time.

Getting the kit from Jules and getting it changed are one thing (well, two, strictly speaking), but is anything likely to be stuffed from operating in this mode for years?

Thanks

PS if I decide to tackle this, is there a guide somewhere to getting the bumper off and so on? Couldn’t seem to find one…

Hi Hogweed.
Since you've got the mk2 version this should give you some guidance. http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=38392
It's really an easy job to get it off, however I would suggest you use some masking tape to protect the wings from the bumper.
And the resitor:

Cheers for that. Must try and peer through my bonnet later.

Aircon still works well, so hopefully nothing knackered due to the fan being iffy for several years

My problem is that I don't have a garage, it's b* freezing and raining all the time, so I'll probably end up buying the kit from the excellent Jules and then paying the garage to do it anyway, though I'd prefer to do it myself.

Before I do though, that post you pointed me to refers to fuse number 9: Red 10amp (this supplies the aircon compressor) which seems to be worth checking first - is that under the glovebox?
Cheers

Changing the resistor isn't that big a job, I helped my Regional Sec replace his but I have to admit I wouldn't fancy doing it at this time of year, even with a garage http://www.tenerifeforum.org/tenerife-forum/images/smilies/tenerife-forum-cold-shiver-weather-smiley.gif

I agree, a bit nippy for the job out there! :D
Fitting isn't too bad, and you'll have likely caused no harm if the A/C is still working OK. :)

Well, it's done (was going to post a piccie, but it doesn't seem to like the url to my Google Drive  )

Anyway, it's quite different from before - the fan is still audible, but not quite like a turbofan engine.https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzgGwW67yIFgWnFqM2xsRHVDVHM/view?usp=sharing

Big thanks to Jules for providing the kit, and everyone who provided helpful info here

Excellent, glad to hear it went OK. Although it's not ideal to have only the high speed operational, usually the car makes sure nothing is damaged even if operating like this for a while. :)
