Steering rack V8 vs Others

Hi,

Is the steering rack exchangeable between Rover 75 V8 and V6 ? Apart from
different ratio, are all other mounting points the same ?

I found brand new LHD steering rack for V8 that I would like to put on my V6.

If it is a LHD V8 rack, it will fit a RHD V6, not a LHD V6 though ;)

The RHD V8 rack is a standard LHD FWD rack fitted upside down :eek:

I think that is because on the V8 the steering arms are in front of the wheel centres not behind, so the rack has to work the opposite way round.

Sadly I haven't got one otherwise I would have gone out and checked. :getmecoat:

Yes, that is correct a RHD V8 steering rack will fit your LHD car ;)

I found this not to be the case the hard way :(

On my subframe the mounting holes are 32 cm apart, on the QAB000420 they're ~34.5 cm apart.

Unless I got a defective rack. Can anyone confirm about the mounting points please?

Probably not of interest, but just need to mention that there are 10 used LHD racks available from the Norwegian breakers database at a cost from 1500NOK`s and up: http://www.nbfbildeler.no/templates/PartInfo.aspx?Matrix_Id=1&Brand_Id=3900&Model_Id=3908&PartGroup_Id=15&Part_Id=7041
I think there are similar databases to be found in Sweden and Denmark. Getting a LHD rack is no problem as long as you search outside your country border :) What about searching at ebay.de for "Zahnstangenlenkung" ?

I ordered two tie rods from Mat but found out that the tie rods in the V8 are longer so steering racks must be different from other ZT/75's

Thanks Einar. I bought a QAB000230 from eBay.de yesterday after searching for Zahnstangenlenkung and it was posted today. It's from a 2005 car with 110000km and cost more than the "brand new" RHD V8 rack :o
My original rack has had a play for several years and now that I finally decided to replace it, it has started to leak at the right hand end.

When the rack arrives, I can compare the two. If the difference lies only in one of the mounting points (the thinner one), perhaps it can be rewelded to the appropriate location. If not, I have a RHD V8 rack for sale :D

Input from people who have dealt with this is still very much welcome.

I was aware about the V8 tie rods being longer. As I had fitted new tie rods from Mat a few months ago, it wouldn't have been a problem to swap these.
