View Full Version : Another ABS thread!.... More Abs woes....

My speedo has stopped working and my ABS light is on.... its an MG ZT diesel......

I've replaced the ABS sensor on the drivers side this morning, twice, with two new ones I had in the attic, this was after freezing outside drilling out the old one which refused to give in to me!

The original problem seemed to be damage to the cable, because I twisted it about where the outer sheath had been worn through, and the ABS light went off..

But neither of the new cables seems to be working.... any suggestions

Thanks & regards
Phil

if you drilled it out you may have drilled too deep and damaged the bearing

Thanks, but pretty sure I didn't go to deep as I removed the 'sensor' end intact when pulling out the remains of the unit with pliers..... any way I would know for sure?

I'm not the most informed on these matters, but my ABS suddenly became faulty on the front nearside. I traced as you a faulty outside wiring.

Unlike you I couldn't drill mine out and had to get a secondhand hub fitted as even the garage couldn't get it out.

What they did find though was that just beyond the plug that vanished into the engine bay there had been a short and the wires had fused.

A replacement plug cut and shut and new ABS sensor from a well known auction site resolved it all. Light now out and my cruise control is working again

When I say the end came out intact, I am referring just to the very end where the sensor has flatted sides.... just one question before I start going through all the tests next weekend... I cleaned out the hole with cotton buds / meths and blowing out any debris, but did smear some petroleum jelly on the new sensor to help it back into place. I don't think this would have any effect on the magnetism .. but who knows!
Thanks for the pointers so far...
Phil

If you get an ABS plug and socket from the scrappy and fit an extended cable between them you can plug any ABS sensor into the NSF and see if the speedometer then works, which should help narrow down the fault.

If none of them get the speedo working then check the ABS modulator plug connections - not unknown for them to corrode.

More work for me next weekend then, hopefully I'll get a dry day as no garage!

Why didn't I listen to that voice in my head that said 'just tape up the wires' on the original when the ABS light went out.........

might be worth putting the original back in....just in case there's another fault

Hi David, it was the original I had to drill out.... I'm going to try to remove the new one next weekend and try filing a bit off the fixing lug, so it sits deeper into the holder, it's not an OEM.... failing that I'll just have to go through the tests until I solve it...... no speedo and a wonky fuel gauge for me this week!
Thanks for the advice all... :-) ( And the links )

Having attended two this week, just make sure that the sensor is fully home, even 1mm out and the sensor will not work. inside the hole at the bottom is a very small retaining bit in the hub on the outer side, ensure that the rust is removed from here too. Also sometimes you think it is fully home, and it is not

Also ensure the mating faces are clean, i used some sandpaper ans a wide blde screw driver to clean the hub side, (there may be an earthing requirement?) but i am not sure) so don't quote me on that one, but the face needs to be clean too - it does affect some cars maybe not ours

just from my experience this week.

Forgot to update my thread and say thanks.... I couldn't get the ABS light off, so as I has a new wheel bearing tucked away, I had a local garage change it, along with another new ABS cable! Problem solved for £80 labour inc, so not to bad. EXCEPT

When I pulled into the garage early in the morning I clipped my rear drivers door on a parked car trailer = 2 deep indents and scratches onto the door & wheel arch as well :duh:

Car going back to said garage next Monday for fix & panel spray... more Wonga gone :sad3:

Back in February I had problems with my ABS light, eventually I had a garage replace the drivers front wheel bearing & cable ( at least I think they replaced the wheel bearing!), all OK until a couple of weeks ago...
My speedo started to work intermittently, then my ABS light came on again.
Now I have no speedo, a permanent ABS light and am miffed!
I replaced the ABS cable today, but the light has not gone out and the speedo is still dead... and unlike the last time, I extracted the old lead without damaging it and having to drill out the remains! so no chance of damaging the bearing ......any suggestions on what I might check?
Advice appreciated as always..... thanks ( MG ZT CDTi )

if you drilled it out you may have drilled too deep and damaged the bearing

Highly unlikely. To do that you have to drill through the outer race, as I see it.
Even if the OP was not be the smartest tool in the shed, he would have to be rather stupid to do that.:D
