I am looking at a 53 plate 1.8t that has been parked for the last five years, the owner has started the car occasionally but now it will not start, the engine turns over and there is a good spark,
I cannot hear the pump prime when I turn on the ignition ?, any ideas ?

The fuel may have "gone off". Put fresh fuel in and try again. There is also a fuel filter "syndrome" (the filter unscrews itself). Do a search for it on the forum search.

I'd say that's the first thing to check out. If the pump doesn't hum for a few seconds at ignition on, it isn't getting the juice.
Check the plenum is dry.
Check the fuel pump relay (see below)
