View Full Version : Have I enough oil or not?

One of those school maths problems, but with a couple of bits missing :D

I buy my oil for my diesel's services, in 25L bulk drums. I'm coming to the end of the drum, so not sure whether I need to order up another or not.

Its 10/40 oil remaining plus the 25L plastic container, fitted with the usual plastic tap, all together weigh 5.82Kg. Oil and filter change needs 6.8L

Is a bit less than 5.82Kg in weight enough for the 6.8L of oil needed for the change?

Suggested weight conversions for engine oil seem to vary wildly and obviously I don't want to be running short midway through the oil change.

HARRY !!!!!!

For goodness sake pour the darn stuff into a couple of containers you know the size of.

You will then be able to compare what you have against what you need.---:p::p::p::p:

Fraid not.
The density of engine oil is around 0.89 at 20C. It's higher at lower temps and lower at higher temps, but let's assume the 6.8 litres required is at 20C.

If all the weight was oil, then you'd have 5.82 divided by 0.89 or 6.54 litres. So 260ml (half a pint) short.
For the required 6.8 litres, the oil weight is 6.05 Kg at 20C.

That would just be far too messy

I have a rather neat hanging digital scale in the garage, which I use for working out the weight of gas in bottles.

That will do, thanks.

I'll order another drum in readiness for May when I do the service.

Gas in bottles ??

I generally use the sweat line on the outside.

Tiny bit less of the vino and pouring oil much less messy.---:D:D:D

In practice that should be more than enough - I did measure it once and IIRC it was around 6.4 litres to get to the top of the dipstick.

Colvert is the second photo, where he pops his head up and twerks his eyebrow.
