The problem:
Until September 2014 the engine has always started easily, but after summer was difficult to start when it was cold, warm or hot.
I done:
1. checked the battery;
2. checked the contacts on the starter solenoid;
3. checked spark plugs and leads;
4. changed the injectors.
But without any results...
My car is from 2000 and the petrol filter is the early type - metal clad type.

I removed the filter and I cut it, inside it was very black and I think very dirty

I removed all the strainers and filter element and I welded the empty housing of the filter

After that I applied a good layer of epoxy glue by DoneDeal

You can refit back the filter with epoxy and weld very easy, there's enough space

I instaled the filter back in the fuel tank but under the bonnet I installed the new inline petrol filter - I used $2 filter PartsMall PCH-021 made in South Korea for Mazda 626 2,2l:}
I used 0,3m fuel hose GATES 3225-00053 and 2 jubilee clips.

The result is GREAT! The car now starts very easy, like when I bought this car in 2010 or even better:}
Already done about 500km and everything is nice.
The conlusion is that the early type petrol filter - metal clad type don't lasts forever. My car done about 243k km ~ 151k miles.
Now I can change very easy the petrol filter under the bonnet with other $2 filter every 20-30k km or when I will feel that is the time.

Hi. Glad you solved the problem. It is surprising how we can by a system of elimination, make our own diagnosis, and then pass on our knowledge to other members of the club. Thanks for finding and following this through.

Update: After 5000 miles everything is great, engine works fine:}

I'm pleased that you've solved the poor starting, but I'm not sure about your conclusion.
The conclusion is that the early type petrol filter - metal clad type doesn't last forever.
That would depend upon the amount of contamination in the tank, wouldn't it? Your experience is thankfully extremely rare, so maybe you've been unlucky with your petrol sources? :shrug:

In my years of driving and fixing cars I've never known a filter to not gradually get contaminated and reduce flow.
I'm sorry but the everlasting filter is a figment of MGR's imagination.

Yes Simon, I know that petrol in my country is not the best, but I think that 150k miles and 15 years for one filter is a lot, the fuel filter was clogged. For example, recommended replacement intervals for fuel filters from others manufacturers range between 20,000 miles and 150,000 miles, but MG Rover leave the replacement interval to “lifetime”, like autobox oil... I think a clogged fuel filter can destroy the engine. It's sad that now we can't find new early type petrol filters :(

ATF is listed for renewal at 60,000 miles. :}

The petrol filter will always get contaminated.
A good blast with compressed air against the direction of flow will do wonders, and I always do this against a newspaper to see how much dirt gets released.

In most cases the filter can then be re-used almost as good as new.

On one of my Audi 80's when I got it at 50,000 miles I opened up the inline canister fuel filter. I wish I had taken photos, it was virtually completely clogged, how there was any flow I'll never know. Just think of the gallons of fuel the filter has passed in 120,000 miles. Lifetime filter!!! No way.

I'm not really understanding everything here, surely if the filter was causing starting problems then surely it wouldn't run very well ? I mean, if there's not enough petrol to start the engine, then there wouldn't be enough to drive it at any speed !

The filter was clogged and because we can't find these type petrol filters I decided to install an inline petrol filter under the bonnet and the problem with bad starting was solved.

Your not only one that's had it I have to with my Ford Probe, the fuel filter your using is the same one as mine that I had, as the Mazda 626 and MX6 is the same engine. :}

So I bought a later model fuel filter and it cured with no problems, I've replaced everything, almost taking the fuel pump out and stripping it.
Till I changed the fuel filter dispite doing it a few months before.

Replaced and bang she was back to life. :D

Glad you sorted it mate. :}

Now go out there and go for a nice relaxing drive and enjoy the moment. :D
