Cigar lighter issue

hi, ever since I bought my car last year, I have not been able to open the cigar lighter. Today I decided to remove the assembly and have a look seeing if I could fix it.
I found the problem... the housing has melted out of shape and the slider has also melted. Anyone had this happen to them or seen it? Is it easy to replace? Why might this have happened? Dare I use it once fixed/replaced?
I checked the fuse and is fine.

The only thing I can think of is that the lighter was pushed in but got stuck and the resultant heat melted the plastic...

Either that or a cheap adaptor was used which overheated?
