I have done a routine oil and filter change on my diesel , done loads of these with no problems, until now , the rubber O ring seal on the filter housing keeps popping out of the side of the housing depositing oil everywhere . I don't over or under tighten the 36 mm head on the filter top , i run the car up to temperature no problem but as soon as i drive it the O ring pops out . Any ideas anyone ?

Is it on the second groove down?

Worth checking that the base of the filter insert is correctly seated. If not it may prevent the top being screwed fully down.

Correct torque is 25Nm, and if the top hasn't completely seated at that setting then either the filter hasn't located on the base or it may be the wrong filter - check the height against the old one.

As above check it is seated in the right groove as below

And also do as Mike says check the height of the filter

It was the O ring not being in the second groove that did it , never done that before , as the wife keeps telling me " put your glasses on " ! we needed the drive jet washed anyway :duh::duh:

I've just read your predicament and can say I did exactly the same thing as you and ended up with the same problems.
Good to see its all sorted now
