Hello friends!

I have a problem for a last seven days starting my 2002 Rover 75 CDT Automatic only when hot. When the engine is cold it starts in a second. The warmer it it's - the longer cranking is needed to start it.

All started when my 75 cut out on the road right after the "low oil pressure" message on the computer display.

It started again after that with no problems and i drove it for a few next hours, but every next time it needed a longer cranking to start.

Went to the garage that same day and checked all oil levels - everything was OK.

Since then I did these things:

- cleaned fuel pressure regulator
- cleaned MAP sensor
- cleaned EGR
- replaced fuel filter
- replaced a camshaft sensor
- placed a new battery today

Also I've checked both fuel pumps by listening - they both buzzing when the ignition is on.

Can someone help me please?

Yes, you need to do an injector leakback test.

One or more injectors are leaking badly and once replaced, normal service will resume ;)

Yes you can ;)

You will need four of THESE (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEAK-OFF-PIPE-CONNECTOR-90-DEGREE-BOSCH-COMMON-RAIL-DIESEL-INJECTORS-KIT-/271090312274?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3f1e3de452) and four of THESE (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Large-Big-Huge-160ml-Syringe-Ink-Cartridges-IPA-Oil-Glue-DIY-2x-Tube-CHEAPEST-/151132405947?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item23303180bb)

Cut the pipe into four equal lengths and attach one end to the syringe and the other to the injector elbow connectors.

Drill four holes of a diameter that will allow the syringes to be passed through into a piece of wood, and be held in place by the flange at the top of the syringe, and suspend this from the bonnet with string, bungee cord or similar.

Take the plungers out of the syringes, then carefully remove the spill off pipes from the top of the injector solenoids, clamp the return fuel rail and fit the pipes connected to the syringes to the injectors.

Now start the car and you will be able to see which injector is defective by the amount of diesel collected in the syringes.

In this example, injector 3 produced 120 ml of leakback in 30 seconds of running, 1 + 4 about 10 ml and number 2 about 25ml.

Replacing injector number three in this car restored perfect hot starting characteristics.

Hope this helps

I forgot to tell you - I had several cut outs today, but no error messages on display when it happend. It looks like things are getting worse :(

Are these also symphoms of an injector leakback?

Yes, this is a typical characteristic of a badly leaking injector(s) I'm afraid :(

Thank you very much MarinaBrian!

You were rightfrom the start!

I tested injectors using instructions you gave me.

Injectors 2 and 3 have and awful leakback.

Can I try to repair it by myself or is it better to send to specialst?

They are charging about 40 euros for piece...

Remove the two faulty injectors and have them overhauled by a specialist ;)

The price of 40 euros is very cheap indeed :}

Brian :D

P.S. it is easier to remove the injector with the engine warm

Thanks for the tip.

I did it before few hours, and by concidence it was when the engine was warm - not becase i already knew that :)

And I found out today that regular price four overhauling injectors is 80 eur a piece, but the specialist I'm talking is a firend's friend so he gave me that price beause a mutual friend asked for me :)

What is the price for that job in UK?

I'm courious :)

P.S. Sorry if my english is bad...

I pay £120 (166 euro) per injector at my local Bosch diesel specialist

Your English is fine by the way ;)

Just want to say thanks again to MarinaBrian.

Earlier today I took all 4 injectors to specialst for overhauling. He ended the job in few hours. After that with a help of a friend I refitted them back into the engine.

Hot start problem has gone!

Not just that my 75 starts normally now when hot - It's cranking time is now as twice as shorter than it ever was! :)
