Hi all,

I am going to do my rear brakes and handbrake shoes soon on my V6. The issue is that the backplates is so rusted that the brake shoe retainer pins wont be seated in their slots in the backplate. They are fixed with bolts and nuts at the moment, working well but not the best solution. I am sure I have seen someone fitted alternative pins and pin retainer washers somewhere which came from another make. Can anyone point me in the right direction?? Replacing the backplates is not an option at the moment...

I did some searching: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=1216385#post1216385

Seems that I need pins ans pin retainers type BR51 and BR62

Does anyone know which Ford these parts belongs to? I found a fitting kit for a Sierra which seems to have the same pins and retainers.

When I did mine I too looked at the sierra pins and I agree they do look like they may do the job. In the end I purchased a kit of pins, springs and retaining washers and the selection was enough to find a perfect match for the job. Don't hold me to it but I seem to recall someone using transit pins but I can't find the thread so I may be mistaken.
Ah, found it. HERE (http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=174635)

M4 or the appropriate size stainless steel nuts and bolts ?
They can be adjusted, don't rust and can's fail, ending up in between the shoes and hub.

The problem is, if your backplate is rusted where the pins locate you need something different.

When i ordered those parts some time ago i just searched using the numbers. No idea what car they are originally from. Funnily enough ive just had to do the same job on my new diesel auto. This time however the backplate was rusted to quite a big hole so i found i had to use bolts instead. On balance now I think i would probably recommend others to go the bolt route because especially the pin which goes in between the caliper bolts is very tricky to handle and a bolt is just that bit more adjustable.

Any chance of finding new backplates, or is that a no go?

You can get them from DMGRS and also from Roverlink

I've not had a look at the backplates on my 2005 but if the rest of the suspension parts are anything to go on, they probably don't have a lot of paint left on them!
I think a good idea would be to buy a new pair, strip the paint off and re-paint them properly using a good etch-primer and top-coat. Its no good replacing the locating pins if there's not enough metal to locate them through. Bolts are ok, but for how long? teve

I used SS bolts with nylon lock nuts and washers with the existing springs. Bit of a fiddle but nice and secure and allows retention of the older back plates

When you use a bolt rather than a pin, you should use a washer as well to increase the area around the hole that the original pin created.

Original pins rusted as well as the plate, which once they weld themselves together create a bigger hole.

When you use a bolt, especially a stainless one you reduce the rusting, and also any movement between bolt and backplate takes place over a larger area so I suspect will last for a reasonable time.

If you plan on keeping the car for a number of years yet then worth replacing the plates. Dont be surprised if you start getting ABS faults either if your plates have flaking rust on them. After I dealt with the retaining pins on mine the first time, ABS fault came up a few days later, and turned out to be rust had destroyed the face of the sensor. Be sure to do your best to clear away any obvious rust and flaking paint while you at it to minimise this risk.

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice.

I removed the brake discs yesterday and most things was pretty rotten. It did not look to good. The brake shoes came off with the discs as the pins was not holding anything in place any longer. I will give this a through cleanup and decide the status of the things. I think I will go the bolt and nut route. I don`T want to spend money on new backplates at this moment.

Just for future reference, anyone looking for the rear backplates can find them here:
75/ZT Rear Brake Disc Backplates (http://www.dmgrs.co.uk/collections/brake-discs-and-pads/products/r75-mg-zt-rear-brake-disc-shield-smf100200-smf100210)

We currently have them in stock, and should have them for a good while yet. :)

Does anyone know the thread dimension and length for the bolts holding the backplate and spindle? Seems to a metric 10 socket head screw to my bare eye, but I have no idea of its length...

Job completed!

As usual, things ended up more throughly than firstly planed. The initial plan was to replace the brake shoes and pads and have the discs lightly skimmed in a lathe. It ended up with new backplates, shoes + springs, discs and pads + all bolts renewed. The backplates was sprayed with rustpreventer stuff before fitting. Callipers and carriers was dismantled, cleaned and painted before everything was put back togeheter.

All looking good now!!
