Laptop diagnostics and Leads.

I have just bought my good lady a new laptop, so we now have a Dell Dimension with clean XP spare. I am considering the possibility of laptop diagnostics. Is this possible or practicable? I've not used them before but as I am now semi retired, it could be a bit of a "project"! All advice gratefully received.
