...sorry for starting yet another thread about changing ATF but I'm confused...

The MGR technical bulletin says "connect T4/testbook to measure gearbox fluid temperature". I was under the impression you could get the dash to display this but looking at the guide elsewhere on this forum it seems the engine temperature is what's displayed.

So, does this mean to get the car to reveal the ATF temperature you do in fact need T4?

Also the technical bulletin says 35c to 40c, but the club document TID-011 says 35c to 45c.

I bought one of these.

Stick the flexi-tip into the top-up hole and use that, aiming for 40 degrees. ;)

Bring the car for a drive to get it up to operating temp and by the time you have the ATF drained and are ready to refill the temp should be near enough. It's been claimed here that the temp is not as important as you may be led to believe as the ATF only expands a tiny amount with a rise in temp. Thats how I did mine @62,000mls and again@ 120,000mls. and its still going strong

No, you don't. If you want to be accurate, all you need is a multimeter.

How does that work?

There are 2 multipin connectors to the right of the battery. The larger one (IIRC) has 2 pins that can be used to read the ATF temperature. Have a look here:

I should have said in my original post, I went the thermometer route as I just couldn't get the damn thing open!
