View Full Version : Is Royal Blue metallic?

I ask because I'm sure my 1st one was. Just washed and polished the new one and it looks like a solid colour.:shrug:

I'm hoping it just need cutting and polishing to bring out the sparkle.

The paint code is JFM.

Yes, it certainly is! :) Almost has a pearlescent quality, on a sunny day.

Just checked this link http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=20831 and it should be pearlescent but mine looks solid. I don't think its been polished or protected from the elements since it was new.

PS: what's the difference between metallic and pearlescent?

Worth claying it, as this will remove all of the horrible residue, and give you a nice surface to polish! :)

I think it need more than that. It's a one owner car (before me) and I think all it's had is a bit of soap and water. Luckily it has been very well looked after maintenance wise.

Pearlescent paints get an additive to them, it basically gives them a slight hue :) that's a really primitive description by the way!

It is scary what clay "finds and removes", even on what you think is a clean car.

Yeah even more so when you go further after clay! Fallout remover finds more then you give it a wipe down with ipa or a product like eraser and even more has appeared!

Claying is brilliant and does indeed enhance appearance but of course all it does is remove impurities from the paint. If you want total bling you will need a DA polisher and some decent polish such as Menzerna.

Costly, bl**dy hard work and adictive:duh::D

Ah, there is a but Jay....JFM looks totally different with chrome waist strips, a bit like the JFM ZT wing I fitted to SWMBO car.

Once the chrome was on, perfect match.

Nonetheless your car looks stunning, not that I'm biased to the nicer colours R40 was produced in :drool4:

Royal Blue is one of my favourite colours when it's well-kept. Here's mine! :)

To the guys with Royal Blue: can you clearly see a sparkle in the paint when its cleaned and polished? I seem to remember seeing it in my 1st one but not this current one.

Yes I certainly can, when the sun shines on it it looks like different coloured speckles.

ooow!:drool4: That sounds more like my old Royal Blue.

Mi thinks I need to get cracking. I spent 2 days T cutting and polishing/waxing by hand my White Gold Tourer and it made a huge difference.

I have one of those "plug into the fag lighter" 12v polishers now. I've not used it yet. What do I need to do to get the best from my paint?

I've found that it has an almost electric blue tinge in some lights.

Do clay it before you get the buffer on it, as I think you'll be amazed at the difference. Then use a cleanser polish, and some wax on top.

Most detailers would advise you to invest in something like a DAS-6 dual action polisher, some decent pads and a selection of course medium and fine polishes. It's laborious and desires a certain amount of practice and could cost you at least £200 +.

You could as an alternative find yourself a car detailer and have them do it. You'll then have a superb finish which you will be able to look after for many years by claying and waxing as required.

The 'plug in' 12v type polishers are not really suitable for detailing your paintwork.

try & t-cut one of the B pillars (if its had a respray then the likelyhood of painting the pillars is less) you should, no matter how negleted, be able to see the sparkle under sunlight or a bright lamp. be aware that a professional polisher will quickly burn through the laquer & topcoat of your paint if you are unfamiliar with one.

That bit of sparkle I can see where the sun is catching your front wing is what i remember from my first Royal Blue. I cannot see any of that on my current one.
Interesting that you suggest claying before using a cleanser. I was planning on a general wash, then wash with Tesco Daisy to remove all the existing finish, something to cut the finish back (similar, but more up to date than TCut), followed by either a polish or wax (open to advice here because I don't know the difference).

In short polish is a preparation stage designed to remove oxidisation, swirls and prepare for a finishing product. Wax is the finishing coat, which gives protection and adds gloss/shine.

That makes perfect sense.
Any recommendations for a product instead of TCut?

Depends how bad the paint is to be fair.

You can fairly safely go for Autoglym Super Resin Polish to bring the surface back and then logically Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection on top.

You can see the 'sparkles' because pearlescent paint relies upon light refraction to give it that particular quality, whereas metallic paint relies upon light reflection.

when you clean it she should come up lovely! The sparkles are created by small mica flakes in the paint. When dirty it does look a bit flat. All the more reason to polish everything!

Would you use the Autoglym Polish by hand? I assume it is easier than Tcut.

Don't think I mentioned: when I was waxing the car on Monday I could see dark patches or dark clouds in the paint. I assume these will be years of contaminates in the paint.

Haha no worries, could you possibly picture these clouds? They may be etching from things like bird droppings! If that is the case they will need more work than srp by hand

That looks :drool4: Dave.

Ever thought of filling your wheel arches out with 225/55-17 tyres rather than 225/45-17 tyres.

not yet but a good thought (although maybe it should be 215??)

A 215 would be the normal tyre choice such as a 225/45-17 being the normal choice.

A 225/55-17 is fine. Just check for any pootutions in the wheel arch.

Being an different 'normal' size they are more expensive :getmecoat:

would this affect the speedo settings?

the arches are open to a fuller wheel obviously and a thicker profile would make it even smoother!:drool4:

My royal blue does has a slight teal colour tinge to it in the right light, the door I just put on it is the same at the front but not at the rear due to it (or the rear of the car it came from) being resprayed at some point. Looks fine in some light but stands out quite badly in others (to me anyway lol)
