Help please. I've got a project car that appears to have had a gorilla working on it.
Many of the breather pipes have been cut/joined in a variety of diy ways and the quick fit seals (red or yellow coloured plastic collars) damaged. Does anyone know if these items are available - I've spent an hour looking on Rimmers website but now given up because the Mrs. is complaining about me "wasting my time on the laptop - again".
So far looks like I need a couple of 12mm and a 9mm and - and how can they be removed?

Thanks to Salad-Dodger it looks like some red collets are available on e-bay (@£10!!!). I need some well informed member to confirm if these seal things (in the range of sizes fitted) are available new; it's not just the collets though, I really need the whole lot - the inserted 'bodies' which have 'O' rings seals and collets already assembled - and how are they removed/fitted?

These fittings look like standard air fittings to me. These are the type that you push back the inner ring and pull the pipe out of the fitting. Should be available from most hydro/air companies.
I have an engine in my workshop. I'll have a look to see how they fit and post a pic. If you copy it and run it off, you can take it with you to the shop.

Here's a couple of pics of these breather connections. I've had a good look at them and I can't for the life of me see how they would come out without breaking them so the best thing would be to show a pic to the supplier.
I think they would be a push-in fit.
If you end up buying a pair of top covers that have the connections on, be sure to get either early or late versions depending on your coil pack version. Steve

These are the exact two items I first looked at (the other is on the top of the throttle body). Not only are these two busted but both bodies (the black bits) are inserted into the cam cover at an angle; hopefully they are just a light press fit then.
You think they are (LP) air line fittings, thanks again for your trouble.
Having taken a closer look it's now possible this engine has been cooked - no oil on dip stick and there is a black dry'ish flaking deposit inside the cam cover (when peering thro' the oil filler cap) and at least one breather pipe seems to have melted inside the quick release collet!! It's only done around 65K
Anyone out there got a decent/working 2.5 (2004 manual) engine for sale?
I've probably got much bigger problems than just trying to find the air fittings.

John; don't do that. You could easily end up with even worse problems than you have now.
... no oil on dip stick ..
Ensure that you are reading it correctly. Here is the special procedure (http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=1233152&postcount=46) required for the KV6.
... and there is a black dry'ish flaking deposit inside the cam cover (when peering thro' the oil filler cap) ..
That doesn't necessarily indicate that the engine has overheated. You see that on cars which have been inadequately maintained, particularly in respect of oil changes. Here's a suggested plan of action for you:

Get a Haynes manual.
Drain the oil, add flushing oil and follow manufacturer's instructions. Drain flushing oil.
Remove both cam covers.
Work out how the breather tube retainers are held in place, then remove them.
Inspect underside of covers and if the baked carbon deposits are serious, take the covers to be chemically cleaned. Any main dealer should have a parts bath/washer.
Refit with new tube retainers.
Remove oil filter and fit new one. Refill engine with 4.75 litres of clean engine oil. Test drive and adjust oil level strictly according to the above procedure.

Here's one to think about with the pipe connectors. I was looking for some myself and luckily another member sent me some. However, I replaced the T-pipe with caravan plumbing (The original Rover one, when available, is expensive and doesn't last long). The pipe and T-piece etc from the caravan range are push fit, with similar connectors to the Rover ones. It might be work buying the T-piece and breaking it down for the ring, which I suspect is the same size? I originally tried the likes of Wickes, but their plumbing ranges of similar connectors are a size larger. Caravan shops got me converted ok.
The other pipe under the throttle body I am also replacing, I've already sourced flexible clear pipe and connectors from Ebay, just a matter of fitting it.

The full breather pipe kit is available from I think Rimmers. I may be wrong but I have seen it.
The flaking problem seen inside the filler cap is a common problem but doesn't mean that the engine has been "cooked" There is a coating on both sides of the cover gasket that eventually comes off the stainless steel gasket. Bit of a daft thing really but it does happen. It falls straight down onto the cams which is not a good idea when you think about how much of a problem the cam followers are plagued with.
Here's a pic of a well used and a near new gasket.
Get the engine running before you write it off. Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised! Steve
