View Full Version : 3 Speed Fan - Rotten luck?

Recently purchased a 2000 V6 Auto, before I bought the car I did the demist test (twice) to make sure the fan kicks in, and it did! After I collected the car it ran nicely on 87/88*C, Great I thought.

A week later (today) I am using the car and notice its running in the late 90s, let it go to 102 then got out and checked the fan was on.......nothing! Did the demist test......nothing!

I swear I didn't imagine it working (twice) before I bought it.

Arrrggghhh! I think I am destined to have a new fan fitted on a 75.

Apparently, the 3-speed motor brushes last around 50-60K miles on average. One last fling I guess.

Not necessary Stephen. Just fit a couple of new motor brushes.

Thanks Simon. Do you know where I can get these fan brushes from?

Thanks Chaps, will order some once I have spoken to my garage, just to make sure they are happy to fit these. They are normally pretty good to be honest.

Edit. The link is for Rover 75 Fan heater Carbon brushes? Not 3 speed cooling fan brushes?

Good luck with that! :D Fitting new brushes is a specialist thing Stephen. If you don't want to do it yourself then an auto electrician is a good bet.

Don't worry; it's a mistake. I have told them, but you know what it's like trying to get IT people to change anything. :o They are the brushes for the radiator fan, I promise.

Totally understand, Stephen!

Mines was tested by a garage a few months back as fully working!
Now the low speed did not (temp at 107 before fan kicked in).

So had 3 options (in order of costs):
1. Repair bushes (IF commutator are fine)
2. Get a refurbed fan
3. Get a new fan

I opted for (2) but with a 2 speed fan and gold resistor - know to last longer than the 3 speed fan :)

Fitted yesterday - coolant will hit 100 and then comes down to just below 95

Just recently we have all been surprised to find some gold resistors failing.

I think WAYNE S luck rubbing off onto forum now :( :( :(

Simon - any particular type/brand/batch of gold resistors been identified yet?

*Update.

Had this checked out today, the fan DOES work through using the Aircon but is not triggered by the engine temp. So it looks like the control Module?

For now I can force the fan on by using aircon, if it gets hot.

Anyone had this before?

check the temp on the dash using the IPK diagnostics at see what the actual temperature is rather then relying on the guage

Hi Greeners, yes I do. I always run the car with the actual coolant temp showing using the diagnostic tool ;)

Not just recently either, I fitted one to my last car probably around 5-6 years ago and it only lasted 18 months, or to be precise, 18 months after I fitted it I noticed it was no longer working :D

The replacement however continued providing sterling service until I sold the car a couple of months ago

Driving along it stays around 92, then slower moving traffic on a hot day around 98-102

With the fan it stays in the late 80s.

Is the fan is running at 102° and does it successfully reduce the temperature to 96°?

No, the fan didn't kick in itself at 102. The fan only works if I stick the aircon on LO (not ECON) then it works. So it seems my problem is the control box/module. But I understand that is part of the fan set up behind the bumper.

Stephen; can you repeat the test using the windscreen demist button when the engine is cold. Using 'Auto' doesn't guarantee that the air con. is activated as you've found out.

Simon

Will do Simon.

So when the engine is cold I just switch on the ignition and press the demist button? Sure I done this on Monday but nothing happen (with the fan).

The engine needs to be running (not diesel).

Doh I thought it was just ignition on for petrol cars.

Ok engine running when cold and press demist....

Will report back. Cheers Simon ;)
