View Full Version : Any idea where i can get an exhaust crossmember from?

The exhaust is knocking on my ZT 190 and after some investigation it looks like it's against the crossmember. There appears to have been a piece of rubber between the exhaust and crossmember at some point but it's now all broken up and most of it's gone. Any ideas where i can get a new one from or shall i just stick a piece of heavy rubber there? I've looked on ebay and parts sites and can't find it, i don't think it's anything an exhaust place could help me with. The photo is one i found on the internet to show which bit i'm talking about and not of my car.

My car (diesel) doesn't have one and when I was last under a V6 it didn't have one either.

They are just peices of metal AFAIK.

There's definitely a piece of rubber between the exhaust and the crossmember, there's a bolt holding it on from underneath. It's an aftermarket stainless steel exhaust system so maybe it's not an original part.

My 1.8T didn't have rubber on the cross member, maybe somebody stuck some there because the exhaust was hitting it, I had that problem. For some reason the exhaust (aftermarket, no idea about name) dropped just enough to bring the cross member within the normal range of exhaust movement. After several failed attempts to stop it including replacing the rubber mounts my mechanic mate made up an additional exhaust mount, that cured it. Since had exhaust replaced and never had the problem again.

You can see the bolt that holds it in place dead centre here, the crossmember looks original as well.

If you look at the Rimmers part illustration, #4:

There is a "bolt hole" in the cross member but nothing occupies it. I suspect somebody has made use of it to fix a rubber buffer because the exhaust was hitting it.

How strange, the engine mount was changed a year ago so i doubt it's that. I guess i'll rebodge it then!

As said , there was not any rubber used originally on the cross-members :}
The pipe knocking on the cross member is very common however and usually means that the supporting rubber hangers are knackered / missing . Can also be because an aftermarket exhaust has not been aligned properly , or it just does not fit well !

Had the same problem a few years ago, after a new exhaust fitted, just add a couple of washers between the four bolts and the body and that solved the problem

I think i'll try the washers. Here are some photos after removal, the exhaust was done about 8 years ago i think and only just started knocking so that's a pretty good bodge!

That's definitely not original - but if it works... :D
Just be careful, as the exhaust gets very hot. Needs to be something that can take a bit of heat.

That's what i was wondering, any ideas anyone?

I'd honestly recommend looking at other ideas first - Stu's idea of a few washers to lower the bar slightly may be worth looking at.

Well it wasn't that, seems to be hitting the underbody below the glovebox so it's the same area. Seems to be a lot of movement in the exhaust so I guess as it's a stainless system (and I guess a lot heavier?) it might have stretched the rubber hangers? I'm going to get it looked at this week as it's annoying.

New hangers then - you can get poly versions which fit, and should minimize any movement. :)

Are you sure it is the exhaust, and not the heat shield, which do tend to rattle a lot if the bolts are not securing it properly, or rotted, and are not attached, if so, then a take bolt out, and use penny washer to re-attached

I can replicate the noise by moving the exhaust, it has quite a lot of movement in it. I think the hangers are just old and stretched, we shall see I guess.

I've had this problem since I renewed the middle/rear sections. When original it was welded; now it is 3 sections, and also my exhaust gets hotter due to running on lpg. I've fitted a 2nd U-bolt adjacent to the join between middle and rear sections. This then has an exhaust strap (from ebay) which is about 4" long, rubber? with 2 holes containing metal inserts. 1 hole goes to the new exhaust U-bolt; the other to a much smaller U-bolt that I attached to the anti-roll bar. This one needed jubiulee clips either side to stop it sliding when I got it to the optmum position. It gives a lot of extra support to the exhaust somewhere near the centre. And I have to change the front rubbers every few months as they do stretch with the extra heat of lpg.

Second that! Worked for me.

Slight misalignment on each joint of a replaced system can cause quite a lot of misalignment generally.

The hole in the middle of the bar is probably a jigging hole related to manufacture

Change the rubbers and then with the car on a hoist lift and twist until it all hangs cleanly, retighten the clamps etc. Been there.

Rubbers replaced and the problem has gone, they did look rough and had small splits in them. It's like a different car to drive now. Took it to my local F1 Autocentre and they didn't even charge me.
