DVR Front & Rear Camera How To

DVR cameras are already popular and becoming even more so. There are various cameras out there but it doesn't have to be an expensive mod and is relatively easy to do.

The SD card records in a continuous loop and when it is full it will over record the earliest footage, the files on the card are spilt between front and rear facing videos for ease of finding what you need

At a recent Midlands Nano Meet I fitted with the help of Bernard a kit to Roy's car and the how to is below for anyone thinking of doing the same.

Can I ask if you re fused the charger or are you relying on the fuse for the wiper sensor ?

Only reason I ask is I am in the middle of doing mine and just waiting for a piggy back fuse coming ?

Thanks

A really good "How To" Rob.
I am yet to fit the rear dash cam, so there are some good tips there. :}

Regarding the front camera, I also ran the wires down the A pillar but also ran the electrical supply and plugged it in to the fuse board using a fuse tap.
I used a USB power supply lead like this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191521305370?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

I to would be interested in seeing the picture quality.
I have a G1W which I'm very happy with and was going to get another for the rear but this looks a little more compact.

Excellent how to as well.

What if you have side and curtain airbags fitted? Is the wiring route potentially a problem in that case?

Thanks for an excellent thread Rob. I've been thinking of fitting something like this for a while and the price seems very reasonable.

There's no wiring in the way of the airbags, the only cable routed that way is for the rear camera but the trim is only teased away at the top to get the cable into the roof lining before putting the trim back so you are ok

I appreciate there are different cameras etc but on the one you have can the rear one be used for parking assist? Just curious

The parking assist ones usually display in a mirror image rather than the real image, so it is like reversing using mirrors. They normally have markers to you can place the vehicle more accurately and are also mounted right at the rear of the vehicle.
I suppose, if wired in through a screen, a rear mounted dash cam would give you a view out of the rear window - but I can't see it being anywhere near as good.

Here are some shots from by cheap £10 camera from China. :D

A little bit further, with the final yellow "Stop" bar lined up, I would be virtually touching those bins. :D

Depends on the size of the video being saved.
Class 4 can (min) transfer 4 mb/s.
If the video is 10 mb/s, then it might not be able to write fast enough to the card.
If the video is 4 mb/s or less, then you're fine with a class 4.

My Mini 0805 needs a class 10 USH III to perform perfectly.

A good how to but no mention of the problems I have with the same unit.
If fitted where shown on the windscreen it is not only in full view but is also
open to the heat of the sun through the glass which overheats it and will not be good for long term reliability. I received a self adhesive pad with mine which is much neater and smaller than the sucker assembly but it is impossible to fit it so that it is unobtrusive and shielded from the sun. The best place I found was just in front of the drivers sun visor which still got too hot and also prevented operation of the sun visor itself. The only answer i can see is to remove the unit each time I leave the car which rather defeats the object of the exercise.
Have now found this setup which looks quite promising to me.

Hi,
I am thinking of doing this but don't have rain sensing wipers, I will check to see if I have the loom but if not, any idea of the next best option for a switched live would be appreciated!

I have picked up a 12V live when the engine is started via a piggyback fuse
in the passenger fuse box. I ran this supply via the A pillar and headlining into the front interior light. There is loads of room in there for a 12V to 5V--

Ordered one of these the first week of August.... and received it last weekend! The joys of buying from china.

Anyway installed yesterday and reviewed the quality today and I have to say I'm quite impressed.

The only problem is the radio signal quality has suffered quite badly, I'm guessing due to the rear cam being mounted near the rear window and must give off a fair bit of interference. I'm going to try a different route for the cable but just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue with it?

Also does anyone else's remote control have a spelling mistake on it? :D

Many thanks for this guide Trebor - fitted one of these I picked up for about £9 delivered from China:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F 112664508296

I didn't bother with the charger - bought a nice wee gadget on Amazon with 2 usb sockets I put in and connected the camera / charging cable for the dash.

Thanks for the steer on the wires tho - all working well and I'm really happy with it - really helped.

Next is a GPS tracker (tomorrow) .......
