How'do folks :}

as of Monday i'll have owned my car for 8 weeks. I'm starting to get some jobs done - maintenance and personalising - replaced the tyres, boost control vacuum hoses and stereo, fixed a small oil leak on the cam cover and cleared up the leaked oil from the plug chambers etc.. gapped plugs (0.80) and got rid of the misfiring i was getting

currently the car runs well.....however :D .... my overboost issue :duh: (i had a misfire and overboost issue under full throttle) seemed to be gone after fixing the oil leak and gapping the plugs - cured the misfire and initially i had no overboost - foot to the floor the car was pulling really smooth and with the intended linear power delivery (no spikes or troughs) now if i floor it i can feel the overboost and hear the turbo spooling(?) i can tell the moment the ECU is about to cut power - obviously i'm driving more sedately for now, i'm more of a cruiser anyway but i want to know that this problem is fixed and that the power the car is intended to have is there for those times when it's needed ;)

after changing and re-checking the vacuum hoses (3mm I.D silicone) i assume it must be either boost control solenoid or faulty wastegate actuator - i've checked best i can for the wastegate actuator being seized and it seems to be moving, i also heard a bit of hydraulic type sound as i moved the arm. is this normal ?
i'd like to rule out the wastegate actuator before changing the solenoid - are there any issues r.e bypassing the solenoid ? - connecting the compressor to the wastegate actuator directly - and would this allow me to diagnose wether or not the actuator is faulty ?

anywho...lol....my main question is r.e replacement boost control solenoid :D

i will buy a replacement this week coming.

does anyone have any advice/experience of aftermarket replacements over the original units ?
i can get a new original unit for £40..ish and i've seen aftermarket units for a similar price. i'd like to stay original however from what i understand the original units are prone to failure, so maybe an aftermarket unit may be better

I believe there is a Subaru equivalent, not sure of part number though but I'm sure somebody will be along soon :)

In the Alternative Parts thread, Bear-mg says:

The turbo boost control solenoid on the 1.8T (Rimmer part number PMK000030) is used on many different cars from Porsche to Vauxhalls.

I found the same part for half the price here http://www.bestpartstore.co.uk/965451

Which leads you to: http://www.bestpartstore.co.uk/ersatzteile-suche?keyword=PMK000030

out of curiosity - i assume you replaced the part due to original being faulty?... did either of you experience overboost? and if so did the replacement part solve the problem ?

cheers :D

My car was overboosting, so much the ecu was shutting the turbo off. I replaced the original with another, it lasted less than a year, now on another original.

Yes, mine was overboosting, very hesistant in the mid range

New solenoid, and it was instantly much better :D

How'do folks

I received my replacement Pierburg boost solenoid (ECBS electronic boost control solenoid) today

didn't take but a few minutes to get it on the car - i had bypassed the solenoid and "hardwired" the wastegate to avoid overboost and potential damage to the engine and gearbox etc...

i've had a wee run tonight and all seems well :) no overboost but i've got back that bit extra boost that was missing from the turbo - due to being purely mechanically controlled via the vac hose and the wastegate actuator spring.
the new part seems to be doing it's job...

here's a few pics....cos posts with pics are always better :Snow:
