alternator light coming on

Set off for work this morning and the alternator light flickered, went off then came back on and stayed on. Drove about 11 miles to work and parked up.
Came back this evening started OK, all lights went out as they should. Got to within a mile of home and the alternator light came on again and stayed on. Parked and came out about 15 minutes later. Started the car and drove round the bloke a bit and no light.

Any suggestions ?

Belts seem OK, lights are bright and didn't dim when warning light came on.

Check the voltage at the battery when the light comes on either with a meter or using the onboard diagnostics.

If it isn't charging then suspect worn brushes. They can be replaced with alternator left in situ.
