Rear View Mirror fitting

Trying to give my windscreen a good clean, I knocked off the driving mirror. I cannot get the thing fitted back, although it seems that there is sensible basic locating bracket.

The bracket has three lugs in a triangular set-up, but I cannot get the leverage to force the mirror base back in.

Has anybody had experience of refitting this?
