Oh well that was a quick back to work.

Got in as normal at 08.30... and finished at 13.00 until next Monday (hopefully)

Just before the Christmas break we had a large solar panel array installed on the warehouse roof, and when I got in today, I was greeted with some dust on the floor and over some of the tools we hire out......

Not a problem, you could say, BUT the problem is, the roof is of the age that could be asbestos!

Most of the morning spent on the telephone to specialists and basically as we don't know what the roof is made of, we really had no choice but to close up shop until we have had the material tested.

If it's not asbestos, then we can re-open and just clean up the kit/unit and no problems, but if it is, then it could be ages before back to work as specialist team of cleaners needed then.

Oh well

we had something similar where I work.
You can't mess around with asbestos.

No not something to mess around with..... which is why we had to shut up shop just in case.

Asbestos. is nasty stuff, but I think the fine fiberglass particles in insulation and fire protection sheathing will prove to be 100% worse long term. So BEWARE!!! innit...

And I reckon you are 100% right about fibre glass insulation. 20 years ago I was asked to go on the machine for cutting fibre glass insulation. Had to wear breathing mask complete cover all protection and work under a powerful extractor.

When I'd finished and had suit sprayed down before removal, I could not believe the amount of fibre glass dust that was glistening all over me.

I immediately refused to go back on that machine for fear of damage to my lungs.

Company fitting the solar panels should have checked if the roof was asbestos.

Well that's also an issue we have.... if it does end up being asbestos, then they'll be sued for the clean up, loss of earnings, etc.

The dust from cutting mdf needs to given a wide berth too. Inspected under a microscope its remarkakbly similar to asbestos.

Got the horrible feeling MDF is going to be the cause of the new industrial disease

Well, one survey has given results (the one done by the company that put up the solar panels) and their results say it was chrysotile fibre (asbestos) the less dangerous one!

Still waiting for survey done by an independent company to give the results.

But it's looking like a specialist company is going to have to come in and clean up.....

If you have to handle it, Asbestos is best handled wet if you can... :}

I ain't going to touch it - not paid enough for that

It's the dust that was caused by the drilling along all the purlins and over the floor etc.... so specialist company it is :D

And the next (and least mentioned) big proven carcinogen? Wood dust! Mentioned on an IOSH course I attended a couple of years back...

Just been speaking to the boss, and it could be that the whole unit is stripped and all tools, fittings etc., are classed as contaminated!

Oh great
