Sat in traffic a little today and the CDT hit 98 degrees before falling back to around 95. Never seen it go that high before. Is this normal? What temp does the fan kick in? didn't hear it if it did.

Possible ,did you heard the fan ?

As far as i know on diesel we have:

Low speed 100 /95
Medium 106/102
High 112 /106

Fwiw, fan on my tourer kicks in at 98.
(Only noticed when tinkering with replacing the stat with a specialist component stat lately, and following the top up coolant procedure).

All sounds nominal to me.
Providing the cooling system is watertight, what you observed was what it's designed to do.
Wait till summer arrives.

Thanks for replies, all normal then. :} Must say the car is running really well, quiet too with it's Dunlop 'slippers' on. New bearing going on Wednesday to see if it puts out the ABS light :duh:

As FrenchMike says Heddy, it's 100°C so your engine didn't quite reach that!

Who says diesels don't need fans? :D ;)

98degC is well over the opening temperature of the thermostat, so the fact it climbed to that then went down to 95 (assuming you really were sat still and not moving) would imply the fan and radiator are working - otherwise it'd continue to climb. Of course, the proper way to test would be using T4 or TOAF to manually activate the fan.

Beware that the fins on the A/C condenser and intercooler can rot and block up their cores, restricting airflow to the coolant radiator behind them. I've found better airflow through now the A/C condenser has been replaced, though I don't know where I could buy a new intercooler.
