View Full Version : Strange Noise after engine is stopped - 2.5V6

Hello
our '04 plate V6 has started making a strange noise AFTER the engine is turned off. This started yesterday and again today. Been fine up to then, with 120k on the clock.

So, park the car, switch off and get out, then this noise happens for several minutes:

To compound matters we cannot open the bonnet at the moment for a better look, but working on that!

Is this the VIS motor rattle I have seen described, or something else do we think?

Best regards

Have you listened with the bonnet up? You should be able to pinpoint the area making the sound.
I know the IACV on my 1.8 makes a high pitched noise after shut down, but yours sounds different.

No! :D

Tim; I see that your V6 has LPG. Does this strange noise occur after a journey exclusively on petrol?

last nite it was after a 30 minute journey on LPG. This morning a similar journey on petrol caused the effect - so probably not related to the fuel type.

If not a VIS motor - what else under there remains powered up for a few minutes after removing the keys??

There are certainly systems that remain powered up for five minutes after key out. Check if the noise stops after exactly 300 seconds.

Could it be air conditioning related?

The radiator fan can be if your coolant temperature is high (and the gauge won't warn you). Your noise doesn't sound at all like a healthy fan, but perhaps it's unhealthy. ;)

Can you activate the digital display of coolant temperature like this (http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=185808) and report back. It should not remain above about 100°C.

Thanks, will try the temp check.

Confirmed it lasts for exactly 300 seconds. Cant be heard in the car with engine running, but can with engine off.

A bad bearing in the cooling fan is an interesting possibility..

Good news.
Got the bonnet open after a short struggle, and here we have the smoking gun:

So, perfectly OK to remove the plug and drive the car as normal I understand?

It'll drive OK without the VIS operating I believe.

Your balance VIS actuator seems to be running continuously. Yes, disconnect the plug and you can continue using the car. Stocktake is your man for repairs and replacements, unless you want to do some soldering yourself. :}

The same thing happened to mine and the it was found to be a stripped wormgear (made out of plastic) in the VIS motor unit.

If it was me, I would get the whole unit overhauled and upgraded.
As said, "Stocktake" is the man to sort this for you. ;)
