When i switch my lights on there is no dash lights comming on and mileage digital display goes out - funny noise comming from back of headlights (lasting a couple of seconds) - but headlights still work - any ideas/solutions ? its a rover 75 w reg (2000) 2l diesel saloon

sounds like a bad connection at the rear of the instrument panel ?

look at the light switch, there will be 1 or 2 thumb wheels, move them up and down and your dash lights will brighten up...

the funny noise from the headlights are the levelling motors doing a self check.... perfectly normal...

Just to be clear, if you have two thumbwheels next to the light switch - the one on the right adjusts the headlight beam aim (to adjust for how the car is loaded). If just a driver or driver and front passenger this should be on '0'. The other thumbwheel (or only one if that's all you have) on the left is used to control the interior dash lights brightness when if it's turned right down then turning the lights on in daylight (e.g. in rain and dim conditions) it will look as if all you dash displays turn off, but they'll still be visible at night - just adjust as needed.
