Rover 75 1.8 misfire

So the the hiccup misfire at 1000 - 2000 rpm solved by removing spark plug cover. Can't explain it, I don't really think the cover was the problem. Anyway took off coils and leads replaced old and very worn spark plugs with new Denso plugs. Now replaced spark plug cover and problem is gone. Despite its terrible reputation I can't help liking the little 1.8 motor. It hasn't given me any other trouble.
