Rear Brake Back plates-How to ?

Can anyone tell me if need to remove rear hub to fit back plates on rear of Rover 75, any help appreciated :}

The hole on the backplate is the size of the stub axle so clearly too small to pass over the hub.

Which means hub removal is essential.

and remember - make sure you fit the handbrake mechanism to the back plate before you refit the hub.. its a pain in the a$$ if you don't....

As confirmed above, you do indeed. Bit of a pain, but with a bit of luck it'll all come apart relatively easily.

One I helped with was a doddle, the other was a nightmare. :D

you don't! if the handbrake cable outer sheath is stuck in the tube, heat the tube gently, the brake cable will then pull out

A hair dryer combined with a drop of oil might do it.

If you are careful and CONFIDANT use a small butane gas burner like you would for plumbing with copper pipes and solder.

However don't overdo the heat with this method.-----------:eek:

What i did was just weaken it with the hacksaw until it broke off. I didnt fancy heating the tube up as i assumed it was lined with plastic and might deform or melt.

Now that i know heating the tube can be done safely then in future i might try it. Originally my intention had been to weld a new piece of plate over the holes where the pins pulled through but when i couldnt get the handbrake cable out i gave up and bought new backplates, at which point cutting the tube seemed easiest.

In any case if you do cut it, then make sure only to cut through the outer tube and not damage the inner. As said, once you are half way through it gets weak enough to snap off.
