Hi, while fitting new clutch noticed that both cables had splits in the ribber gimble.

Refitted them and wouldn't you know it one has completely sheared meaning I can't select. I've managed to push it back on ASA temporary fix but need new.

My car is a 2000 year build and numbered 159048. Rimmers site say I'm out of luck as these are no longer available.

Any suggestions as to how to get around this. Could I fit the later cables for example?

Cheers

Dave

If you're really stuck Dave, Speedy Cables (http://www.speedycables.com/) can help.

It's odd that Xpart never offered the cables without the gear lever. You had to buy it as an assembly

Best bet is take the cables to the local motor factors and see if they can match them.

Another possible answer is to have a word with any of our guys who dismantle the MGR product, EG Holland314. These guys are usually very willing and helpful to assist in such areas.

Thanks guys,

Will a facelift fit a mk1 if I replace the whole unit selector and all?

Not totally sure, but the cables are easy to swop over once the selector unit has been removed from the car, so an earlier cable may be the fix if one can be procured from a similar aged vehicle/type.

Later units definitely fit early cars, as this was what a number of garages did when they stopped making the early selector assemblies. The biggest problem is that the gear knobs are interchangeable

only a problem if they change the whole unit instead of the cables as I suggested.

Yes John, but alas Xpart never offered the cables seperately

or get a second unit and swap the cables and keep the gear lever assembly :D:D

Precisely my point, glad to spend the time helping somebody out with carefully considered options to effect a repair sensibly.

Sorry I'm getting confused!:duh:

Will a cable from a facelift fit onto the mk1 mechanism? I guess I'm asking if the cables are the same?

Pretty sure it will, but they are most likely to be handed, IE, the left one needs to go on the left and visa versa.
Reason?
The gimble and or cable length may vary between the two.

Good luck.

well I stand corrected the two part numbers in the picture are in fact Xpart numbers for cables seperate from the gear lever assembly and still valid !!!!!! Not sure I'd pay those prices though

I've paid £99 for the pair which is half ( more or less ) than Rimmers unless ive misread the rimmers diagram.

Are xpart even cheaper:duh: I thought I had a good deal...oh well never mind.

Will these cable fit facelift if fitting both? same length/fittings etc mine's is 2004 and this sais up to 2004. Phoned Rimmer's and was told by the chap he had no time to check the two different sets of part numbers, your chassis number is listing needless to say the expensive ones. Looking at the pictures on Rimmers web site the cables ULS1000021 and ULS000031 have removable ends (not available!). The cables on my car look more like the ones on offer i.e non threaded ends.

How did you get on with the ones from fleabay?

Regards
Stevie

Hi,

the eBay ones have been fine.

I found that they are not difficult to strip and replace just a bit awkward.

Apparently you can get the gear selector removed by just lowering the front part of the exhaust. I couldn't so ended up dropping the whole exhaust.

Getting the gimbals off the selector end was fiddly. One came off easy, the other took me over an hour. I was being careful because the housing is only plastic. To be honest i was just getting to the point of screaming in frustration when it just popped off. Ive no idea what i was doing differently but i had just slathered a load of silicon grease over the gimbal head, so possibly that was enough to help it along. A decent bench vice is handy for this job.

I'm sure there is a knack to getting these off without all the drama...

Edit...when I spoke to one of the very friendly xpart workshop technicians ( can't recall off hand which garage ) he said that mk1 cables fit mk2 and visa versa.

David - I'm a bit confused here. Do you mean a gear knob from a Mk1 car won't fit a selector assembly from a Mk2 car? (and vice versa)
