View Full Version : ODBII lead for IPK/TOAF - wiring problem?

So I got myself one of these from Ebay.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191563446821
... so that I could run Phil T4's IPK software as well as run TOAF to disable the anti-hijack locking.

Pretty simple so I thought! I've tried it now on an old XP laptop and also on a new Windows 10 laptop and neither will connect. When I'm using the IPK software, I choose the COM3 port for the USB device, hit connect and nothing happens. A similar story for TOAF.

I'm thinking it might be the lead I bought off Ebay. I opened it up to solder pins 7 and 8 together. When I took the case off, two wires came with it - the yellow and the green wires in the pictures below. I re-soldered them where I thought they went, but can't be sure I did it right.

Would someone with the same lead be able to open up their case (carefully!) and see if they match my pictures? Appreciate any help :bowdown:
(The wider part of the connector is uppermost in the photos)

Is that surface-mounted diode at the bottom right actually soldered on the cathode (white line) end? Looks rather wonky to me.

Well spotted that man!
Just taken a close up of that diode...looks like a manufacturing fault to me.

I'm an electronics service technician so spotting things like that (especially on cheap Chinese rubbish) is my day job! :D

If it's new just moan at whoever you bought it from. You can probably source the diode yourself if you want to repair that one to keep as a spare.

All the best! :}

I would bin it and buy something a little better ;)

The embryo from Guang Dong Province hadn't been shown how to operate the pick and place machine properly :getmecoat:

You can't beat the Chinese for superior quality items :eek:

Get one of these if you want to use TOAF, still need to bridge the same pins.

I've bought several cheap OBD leads from China. Not only did I have to wait for ages for these to arrive, they were poorly made or didn't work at all.

Last time I bought this in May: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272100494367
I think it's well made, uses the genuine FTDI FT232RL chip not a Chinese counterfeit etc.
Pins 7 and 8 are already connected and for me has worked "out-of-the-box" with both Phil's IPK Changer and TOAF.

I bought a (working) BMW Scanner from the same guy a couple of years back after 2 from China didn't work.

What I'm trying to say is don't waste your time buying £5 leads from China when you can get one with better quality from Europe for £10-15. It's not that much more expensive, I would say.

Thanks guys, especially Neil for spotting it. One of my first jobs 25 years ago was as an electronic test technician (checking circuit boards for faults and fixing them), so it's a little embarrassing that I didn't spot that. :o
Pity I've long since sold my SMD rework kit, although it's just a diode so may be repairable with a fine-tip on the Weller.

The thing is, this one WAS from a UK seller as I've had my fingers burnt buying from China in the past. I'll see what the seller says when I contact them.

The ch30 boards seem a little better. There are 2 one with the chips on as yours is with another holding pins in. Makes it dead easy to solder and at least ch30 isn't a knock off , it's genuine Chinese and seems to do the job.

That's the same lead I bought, from the same place too:}, I think it cost 20 Quid with the p+p. There's no messing about soldering pins on it, It works straight out the box & connects up to every module.:}
