CDTi non-starter

So, I am having even more probs with my 2.0 CDTi.... now I am unable to start up. 2 days ago I fired the engine, which seemed to start but then cut suddenly before it really got going, not sure if I heard a bang? This was followed by clicking when trying to start. Now I have a new battery fitted, but still cannot get anything other than clicks. All lights on OK, oil etc... fuel pumps priming, fuel being delivered. I just can't get her to fire. Is this some sort of immobiliser issue? Any other suggestions.. I'm pretty hacked off with the car, spent loads getting it ready to MOT having had her off road for 3 months... last thing was having rebuilt the suspension with new springs, shocks, tie rods & drop links, I found the drivers side drive shaft support bearing was trashed, so the shaft was rattling about when the steering was on lock. replaced that as well.. All I want is my car to work!!! :mad:

I'd be looking at the Starter motor. There is a small wire at the front of it that can play up. Remove it, clean the contacts, reconnect and try to start it.

Failing the above, I'd then rebuild the starter motor contacts - a rebuild kit is about a tenner (plus delivery) on ebay.

If it still fails to start, you've at least eliminated the starter motor from the equation, and you've rebuilt the contacts - so the starter should be good to go for many more years

With these common rail engines,a mere leakback on an injector and you can't start :shrug:

If I have understood your post correctly the engine is failing to turn over, rather than failing to fire when it is being turned over. If this is the case, I would have to agree with Ratchet that the starter motor is the most likely culprit. It is at least worth checking.

Well, tried a jump start this evening, just to make sure it was not a problem with the battery, but only a single click, so I have just bought a starter motor... more money in the pit! Hope it works when I fit it this weekend.....

Usually the issue is just the contacts wearing down within the starter solenoid - you can change them, and best of all it can be done in situ.

Well guys, new starter motor fitted this morning, turned key, and CLICK CLICK CLICK, even with a jump. So any other suggestions, have put battery back on charge and will try again this evening, but not holding out much hope :-(

Click click click is a low or flat battery usually - and most standard jump leads don't have enough ooomph to turn over a diesel without leaving the other car ticking over for a good few minutes to give it some charge.

Lidl had some ridiculously thick leads on offer a couple of months ago - £20, but they weigh a tonne and can turn over a diesel with ease. :D
