View Full Version : Will I really need a new flywheel?

Yes or no to the Dmf being replaced, my clutch has finally gone and when speaking with MR Clutch in Peterborough they advise it must be done. I have also heard of changing it to a different-solid flywheel but supposedly that is no good, plus only to buy LUK,Valeo or Sachs kits. Whatever next, again, yes or no? All advice welcome, by the way, Mr clutch has said they would charge £350 labour to change one.

I do not really wish to scrap the car, it has had a few parts in the last year, a tazu, front discs and pads, bushes to front and a full service.

Unless they have the gearbox and engine split, they can't tell if the DMF needs replacing.

They said it almost as if it is compulsory to have the 3 yr warranty, advising all cars that have 150k on the clock need a new one.

Don't let Mr Clutch in P'boro near your car - they will fit a really cheap nasty clutch and make a horrible job of it. My local garage has had two 75s in there after Mr Clutch had put new clutches in with really heavy, stiff clutch pedals.
You should not need a DMF - they rarely fail and are usually within spec.

Get a Borg and Beck clutch kit and an LUK or Delphi slave cylinder (total parts cost about 180- 200 pounds) and get a reputable garage/trader to fit them. Or contact Phil T4 on here and see if he will fix it (he is at MK).
Is this the same car I looked at last year, that had an all-new clutch fitted, but no fluid in the Master cylinder ?

Lol, sorry but I was rather cautious and have not booked it in, hence why I came over here asking questions, I see Dmgrs link sells a good quality kit for only £209, now you have made me wonder and enlightened me so thank you very much Pete, yes it is the one, new tazu fitted but still loses fluid, the old master was no good and did not even have the rubber inside! my issue is finding someone local that is reputable and prepared to do the job, I shall have to contact Phil but I realise he has been ill.

p.s. I did not forget the valve oil, my supplier has been out of stock which is really annoying.

Mine is on 396k and still on the original DMF. It was nearing the wear limits the last time the slave cylinder let go, so will probably be replaced next time round.

Luckily I have a 'good as new' one ready and waiting from the scrapper I bought a few years ago.

I think the DMGRS kit contains a B&B clutch kit with the Tazu metal salve - the Tazu slave has good seal/hydraulics but the release bearings can get noisy. My current recommendation would be to go with an LUK or Deplhi OEM spec slave with the B&B kit. Phil was doing the occasional clutch change with some help from a member on here, the last I heard.

Cheers

Totally agree, don't let them anywhere near your motor, I'm 400 miles short of 200k and have just had the gearbox off, (out the back of the house with my gorgeous assistant), it is fine and the car runs smooth as silk. The only thing I would do next time is take the subframe completely off the car for additional access. :duh:

No chance, my diesel is on the original DMF at 252,000.

Yes, much easier with the subframe off.

I had an Escort done at Mr Clutch in Peterborough a few years ago.....once!

They said it would be £180, after they got it apart it suddenly needed the plate, release bearing, slave cylinder, (Escorts had a cable!) flywheel and spigot bearing, suddenly the bill was £650. I have heard many similar tales of suddenly inflated prices, difficult not to give them the go ahead when they have the car and it's in bits.

Pete, after performing the postmortem on the Tazu slave fitted by our friend, there was evidence of considerable transfer of the seal to the cylinder walls, and combined with the distinct lack of grease in the thrust bearing, would make me think twice about fitting one.

I'm not convinced the hydraulic seals are up to the job, similar to the Mk II Tazu master cylinders, I hope I'm proved wrong though.

So do I Brian. I really don't want to fit another one. I was hoping to get at least 2-3 years out of it.

Brian - I have some release bearing noise when changing gear on my Tazu Slave after 8,000 miles, so I am not convinced of the durability of this item. I cannot face taking the gearbox off again at the moment - I'll see how it goes, and if it gets too bad, I think I would put a Delphi slave in (made using original AP tooling).

I'll try to get to the National Meet in May down in Sussex/Hampshire to catch up with you.

cheers
