Hi All,can anybody give me a heads up to a good reliable replacement thermostat,i am looking for a replacement for the original not an inline top hose version i have had 2 of those, the first one let water gush thru(i tried it before fitting)the replacement was ok to start with now done less than 500 miles and thats given up.I am hoping to get responses from people who have actually done a replacement and been happy with replacement, getting fed up buying so called genuine replacement spare parts only to find they are poor copies.
Thanks Pete

Mine was replaced with an MGR OEM one that I purchased from BS Motors of Sandy, Bedford (ECP2004 on ebay).

It has been on for 4 years and 41k miles and working perfectly.

Of couse this does not necessarily mean that the current batch will perform as well, but I would always go the same route.

Correction - I meant 61k miles not 41k

I know you said you want an OEM (I do too, but am not going to replace mine until it starts to leak) and I am sure you have read through others' experiences on here, however, I would recommend the Wahler brand inline stat. Sad as it is, but I thought it was so well made it was almost beautiful! lol.

There has been some discussion of late about 'OEM' versions, and not having experience of replacing mine, I cannot comment. Although I do have a so called version 3 item waiting to go in when the original inevitably leaks.

For the time being though, I have been more than happy with the Wahler one (tried 4 'ordinary' ones) and 2 years on, it is still good. If it were to fail somehow before the original leaks, I would not hesitate to replace, although I would like to try the 92 degree version if I could find one. The 89 degree one does allow the car to remain between 86-90 degrees depending on how I am driving at the time.

Wahler 3029.89 buying options (https://www.google.co.uk/search?ei=zQR6WqKZLOTdgAb8sbTIDw&q=WAHLER+Thermostat+3029.89&oq=WAHLER+Thermostat+3029.89&gs_l=psy-ab.3...24369.29776.0.30148.2.2.0.0.0.0.91.176.2.2. 0....0...1c.1j2.64.psy-ab..0.0.0....0.J-ZwBRFu1oQ)

there are other temperature options available but the 89 is the obvious one for our cars.

I think the OEM diesel thermostat question has become very much like the PRT for the 1.8/1.8T. Nobody in the supply chain actually has any detail about the currently available stuff. Ask any supplier of PRTs what the relief spring setting is and they look at you stupid. The 'PRT' has simply become an 'inline stat'.

I've bought one from Matt @ DMGRS though have yet to fit it. It is said to remove all the problems of the earlier ones.
