Classic 1.8 75 petrol model. Can over topping-up with engine oil cause the yellow engine symbol warning light to appear and stay illuminated. The handbook states the car is driveable but take in for service immediately. Are there any other issues that might cause the warning symbol to appear.

Phil,

Take it to someone with a T4 so that the stored fault codes can be read and, if necessary, live engine data can be examined. Report back here.

Don't be too alarmed. The 'check engine' light is very often related to emissions so it won't explode tomorrow in a cloud of dust. :D

Took the car to my local garage & repair shop. He hooked up to a diagnostic machine , not a T4. plugged the machine in a socket under the dash above the pedals. Did Oil and Filter change. Yellow warning light now gone. The only concern I have now he used 5W30 oil. I know recommended is 10W40 but he is a skilled guy and I tend to bow to knowledge. Am hoping the low viscosity won't cause damage. I don't do heavy mileage.

Hi Phil,

It's good news that your 'check engine' light is now extinguished. Your garage used 5W30 oil because that's what they had in stock. It's got nothing to do with skill or knowledge. ;) However, RAVE lists 5W30 as acceptable for the 1.8 engine (not Turbo) in climates where the temperature drops below minus 30˚C. Clearly that's very unlikely in Manchester and 10W40 would have been a better choice but I doubt that any long term damage will be caused.

Thanks for that. Next oil change I'll specifically ask for 10w40. My main problem is still ongoing, nearly a year now. Trying to source a passenger side door mirror complete unit, matt black. Tried Rimmer Bros, Findapart, web searches, scrapyards etc no luck. Part sourcing utter nightmare! Finally got one on eBay but unfortunately it is power folding which probably won't work on my car yet it has the same part number as the manual type. I'll put the purchase down to experience. Mine is the basic 1.8 Classic with Manual Folding.
