Hi Folks,

I test drove a 75 Tourer today, Diesel 150,000 miles. Cold and wet- loads of blue smoke out the back.

How concerned should I be? Should I take it out for a test drive- get the engine hot and see if it still has the smoke or just walk away?

Thanks.

Walk away I'd say; blue smoke usually indicates burning oil.

Diesels smoke a lot more and easier than petrol.
It could be faulty or it could just be adjustment.
If the car appeals to you, have it looked at and use it to get the price right.
If it is worn, walk away, but at 150000 I really doubt it.

Could very easily be the turbo.

Change the PCV filter and the intercooler O rings you may find it works wonders.

Definitely signs of a blocked PCV ;)

And a good thrash to get the exhaust hot enough to burn off all the engine oil that is sitting in there.

Another vote for PCV. There's a few guides on here to change it - if you temporarily remove the PCV you can see if the smoke stops.

I bought a lovely 75 Tourer with blue smoke - PCV was clogged solid. Removed, replaced and all good :D

DO THIS FIRST before buying the car, then re-test, if blue smoke present walk away if gone then buy. In other words ask the owner to get the car serviced before buying.!!!

Thanks folks- took the car out for a good run today and the smoke stopped. We found the oil over filled- i've put a deposit down and will hopefully collect the car in the next few days after a new MOT has been put on it.

I'll do my own oil change and new PCV next week.

Cheers.

Do you know about double dipping the oil?

The car can take a few weeks to clear the smoke, don't discount it quickly!!

As reply suggests first pull dipstick from engine wipe stick and then put stick back in engine and then take it out again this 2nd reading will be the true level. Ignore whatever the 1st reading shows it aint right.
