Might be enough room to get it on the bolt and use a ring spanner instead of a wrench. Not sure it'll work properly like this though (lop-sided force).

Indeed - that is exactly what I found. So ****** frustrating when I had the nose off to replace the air con condenser and the fan as well as the alternator and being able to see it, feel it, know what needed to be done but realising that with approx 1cm gap - I was never going to be able to do it.

So as Ceedy suggests - I too thought it better to entrust the job to someone else. And my mechanic says it’s a relatively easy job from underneath with the car in the air, support the engine, remove engine mounts, lower engine a bit and then access is easy and quick.

So from my experience of alternator replacement - prepare all you can to reduce labour cost (remove undertray etc) and save yourself enormous agro by getting a trusted professional to do it.
