View Full Version : Annoying clicking from dashboard

Hi all,

This has been happening sporadically for the last year or so, and I assume it's a something sticking to do with the heater behind the dashboard. Sounds like a tapping noise behind the dashboard from the middle somewhere - as if something is repeatedly trying to adjust but unable to. Noise is similar to the various clicks the dashboard makes when you turn the car off (all my 75s have done this).

It's not in a regular pattern, and often switching between Econ and aircon will trigger it.

Has anyone run into something similar? I don't want to start pulling the dashboard apart if I can help it, as apart from this annoying noise, the interior is rattle-free!

If it seems to be coming from somewhere behind your central vents then I seem to recall it's sticking flaps. Mine used to do it regularly but then stopped. If it's any help it seemed to do it a lot less if I didn't have the temperature set to the same on each side. You can get at the flaps and lubricate the spindles but don't overdo it or you'll never get rid of the smell.

I think that is almost certainly the cabin flap actuator motor linkage.

I gained access to the culprit on mine by removing the glove box, so I could lubricate the linkage.

I had a similar experience with a 827 Sterling Coupe ( what a superb car), I owned for 13 years.
It developed a very annoying " ding, ding ding", noise, from behind the dashboard, not unlike someone playing a triangle. It would just not stop, it was driving me insane.
I took it to the main Rover dealers.
A mechanic came to look at the car, his response ? " what the devil is that ?",
He summoned the workshop foreman. His response ? " what the devil is that ?".

Adding, in 20 years of looking after Rovers...I have never had one to do that.

He rang Rover technical, explained the symptoms. Their response ?. " what the hell is that ?".

Stumped. So I drove away, wondering how I was going to stand that damn noise for the rest of owning the car.

A couple of days later, it did what Rovers do. It stopped doing it, and never did it again.

Aah Rovers...I love ' em .
