View Full Version : Tourer tailgate warning light staying on

The tailgate appears to latch correctly but the light stays on, as do the interior lights. Today I noticed the rear wiper wouldn't work either although the washer did. Only once have I overcome it after spraying the mechanism with WD40 & opening/closing it several times when it eventually turned the light off, but it returned the next time. The glass opens & closes apparently correctly.

I've tried alternatively being gentle and (a little) brutal but no joy. The car locks without complaint i.e. no beep although the alarm horn has been disconnected for ever.

Any clues?

The tailgate lock has two microswitches inside the lock assembly that sends signals to the BCU. 1/locked/unlocked and 2/open/closed. NC microswitch 2 is faulty. The lock will have to be dismantled and the microswitch examined, or replace the lock. The microswitches are IP67, so anything that happened after spraying had nothing to do with WD40.

The wiper and the lock are un related.

Thanks for that. I've not ever had the lock off the tailgate. Is it straightforward?

Just seen your added comment re. the wiper. Doesn't it become non-functional when the tailgate's open?

Correct, opening the tailgate or tailgate window will disable the rear wiper. When I said lock and wiper are un related I was referring to the lock fault. Suppose I should have said there is nothing wrong with the wiper, it has nothing to do with the lock fault. :}

As for being straightforward, I would say yes. to me, easy peasy. Dismantling the lock to replace the microswitch to me is also easy peasy.

Thanks for that. I got one today from a helpful breaker on eBay who tested the latch in situ before removing it & letting me have it for £13. :} I wasn't going to do much better than that with microswitches and it should fix the issue with a quick swap. :}

It should. The only times I have known door open to be the only fault, has been the microswitch. Last one I did was not long ago on a Freelander. The only lock I have not dismantled is the tailgate lock. If it is the MS can I have your lock to take apart.

Can't see why not. :} It's down for delivery tomorrow so I'll update once I've got it fitted.

The new lock arrived yesterday in double-quick time and had been nicely cleaned by the breakers. Fitting as you said was easy peasy and it's fixed the issue. :}

You're welcome to the old one so PM me with your address and I'll pop it in the post.

Hi Mr A.
The set of locks I had from you, I replaced all the FUBAR motors with new motors, and new brushes/end bearings on the working motors, and a new star drive, so in effect, new locks.

I will fit new motors/brushes/end bearings to the lock Dougie is kindly sending me, come Spring I am pro actively replacing all my locks because they have have not been touched.

Then I will do all the locks I take off.

If you remember to let me have your tailgate lock next time we meet, I will do the motors for you, then you will know what is what.

Hi Steve.
yes to cold at the moment to be removing door cards and locks, that's for sure, i have quite a few locks left in the box in the shed, maybe a full set and a couple more.

So it will be interesting to see how you sort them out, as you say even though the locks i have are know to be working, the secret is for how long, the same with any second hand lock if could work for a few days, weeks, months or years who knows it's pot luck unless you purchase a new one. ;)
