All.

Recently had autobox oil changed...ran very smooth until today..that is !
Oil type not the problem or so I'm told..Dexron 3

problem appears only now and again...and I'm thinking could it be a sensor somewhere on the box ?

After motoring for about 15-20 minutes and particularly in traffic, it appears to
stay in either 3rd or 4th gear until I stop and start again, than it may not happen again for 2 or 3 days.

Cleaned out middle plenum...ECU had been immersed in an inch of water.
Drained out and opened ECU but no water penetration.

Any ideas please ?

Im sorry that is the WRONG OIL for the AutoBoxes. There is only one type for this type of gearbox and it is not to easy to get as most dont stock it. XPart do and Land Rover as they use the same AutoBox its Texaco ATF 402 Automatic Gearbox Oil. No alternatives should be used! Take it back and check exactly what was put in as most seem not to know the correct oil.

If you have a XPart Dealer or Land Rover they should be able to help or at least order it for you.

Correct John. As I have stated many times, my first port of call 2 1/2 years ago was Ashcroft Transmissions (as I had seen they do exchange Jatco boxes for £850) and Dave there said Castrol.
I then spent considerable time trying to get a definitive answer.
In short, Castrol e mailed me saying "we do not have an ATF suitable for the Jatco box"
Jatco Japan would not answer my request for a recommended ATF for their JF 403E in the Rover/MG saying I must contact the dealer. (emailed and said 'Gone Bust ! )
I also asked them for the name of their UK agent -- no answer.
One of our Australian members then posted information clarifying that the additives in Texaco N402 were essential for the peculiarities/features of the Jatco box.
I had been told that this fluid was extremely expensive and is one reason I initially looked for an alternative.
Lot of wasted effort really because I eventually found N402 was stocked by Xpart under Part No. VYK00040 and was only £20.70 / 5 Litres+VAT which is, in my opinion, not expensive for a specialist, relatively low demand product.
A fluid change will typically take 4.5 Litres (this is all that can be drained of the 6.5 Litre capacity, the rest stays in the g/box oil galleries) So not expensive and a number of members have reported smoother changes etc after a change indicating, in my opinion that the 60,000 / 4 year
(yes 4 years I now see ) is maybe too long for max protection. I certainly intend doing mine at 30,000 and remember from the above you are only changing some 2/3 rds at each change. If the fluid is discoloured in any way when draining I think I would do another change fairly soon in the event it may 'save the box'
Oh yes, Land Rover also stock N402 under their part No. LNR402.
Another friendly warning ' do not perform the change yourself without familiarising yourself with the proceedure,
particularly that following the initial refill'
Hope that helps

Thanks Crofts for your help/research and advice. I knew of the Correct oil and many posts about it. It just annoys me that you trust your car to a Dealer/Garage for a Auto Gearbox Oil Change and they just stick in what they stock! No proper checks seem to be made and when you try to tell them they say, we dont have that but we use an equivalent. Well there isn't an equivalent so what do you do? How can you find a reputable place to put in the CORRECT oil with so much misunderstanding?

Phew, I'm glad this is sorted now because I was getting concerned. I've just been looking at the details of my auto box oil change and noticed the details as thus....
oil gear: RVYK000040 (JF403E)

it cost £20.70

Oh, the garage was Luffield , Loughborough.

seems this is in order .....:D
