What is the fault in the first place? It can switch on and off different options and do checks to engine management systems,

Not been happy with the noise and harshness of this engine (as stated in previous posts) --looking for mis timing --weak fueling - throttle position sensor mis adjustment- etc .etc

Hi Geoff :)

Testbook is the diagnostic software system for the 75. It will run through a full series of tests on your car covering all engine, electronics and other systems and will produce a report. So it should tell you about any engine misbehaviours and locate the source of nay problem.

The trick with Testbook reports is to think about them carefully.

i.e as an example only - it may say your fuel pump is knackered - the garage then say need new fuel pump £300 please. We say clip has fallen off put new clip on, £5 all sorted.

If it helps and you get a costly diagnosis then do post up for a second opinion before splashing the cash. It could save you a few ££

Thanks for the advice- cost of test without any adjustments being done is
£63 +vat (1 hours lab cost) hoping this will put my mind at rest before the warranty runs out !

Geoff the testbook (T4) session will list all or rather any fault codes stored in the various ECUs on your car none of these codes are dated so they could have happened today or months ago.

Most will be historical e.g blown bulbs long since fixed etc. A good mechanic might pick out a couple of codes worth further examination but if T4 has not been connected to your car for sometime the only sensible thing to do is get a print out of everything then clear all the fault codes and repeat the test in say a months time that way you know for sure if the codes are new or not although again any codes logged may not relate to any real faults.

Shouldn't take an hour?

They will be looking at a display which as said before will allow you to change the way your car works. You might want the doors to auto lock as you move off, stuff like that.

Dont care if it takes all day- MGR should never have fitted this engine into
75 range --
Looking in charity shop at the weekend--found year 2000 autocar mag with used car buyers guide-- ROVER 75 good buy-but dont choose noisey 1.8 !!!
How many years have theyhad to correct this?

Thats the puzzling bit--some of us are delighted -some are not- but why should engines vary ? mine has only got 10 k on it ? its agood job i'm stone deaf in one ear !

Mines done 48,000 miles so maybe they improve with age, loosen up a bit? Mine is a 2003 car. Oh, it's a turbo'd model too but I'd have thought that would have made it noisier?

Mines same as yours Phil but with 26k. Noisy on cold start up but after two minutes very quiet unless driven hard (after 10 mins warm up of course) then you can hear it in the cabin but not enough to turn the stereo up.

Had a 1.8 75 as a loan car, lady in garage said take the Blue diesel car in the corner. Had to show her it was a 1.8T. True story!:band:

Mines very quiet even from cold, all other K series engined cars I've had have rattled terribly from cold, even the brand new MG ZR I had, how odd.

Mines quiet when cold ! But gets noisier when warm - always got this rattle
when under firm acceleration-- like the old crankshaft whip on 3 main bearing engines of old - or piston slap-- I think the noise comes from 3 places--engine block mostly- then tubular manifold and exhaust--then inlet manifold with injectors- these manifolds were cast iron or alloy years back !

Taken car in for testbook this morning-- only 1 fault came up on throttle position sensor-pin not making contact-
got them to fit the undertray I ordered from them last week- £93 + vat-
(missing on some facelift models )--What a difference this makes !---still got the underlying engine noise but much less harsh-- Engineer said the alloy block onthis engine had been thinned down to the extent that it could be lifted out manually !
