View Full Version : Grinding and whinning gearbox / clutch

Afternoon each. I have a 53 plate 2.5V6 saloon with 24k miles on the clock and full service history. Yesterday the car started to develop a truly alarming metallic grating noise when engaging first and second gears, there also seems to be a metallic whinning noise when in any gear at any speed (this noise is only just detectable but definitely there). There is no judder or difficulty in engaging gears so I don't think it's the clutch, ad the noises seem to be central i.e. not wheel bearing related, although the grinding noise does sound a bit like a collapsed bearing.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks!

Hello there!

Am afraid I can offer no advice about your gearbox problem, but thought I'd say hello as I'm in Newark too!

Am sure some of the more technically minded memders will assist soon.

I'm thinking dual mass flywheel problem (DMF).

Either way I'd get it checked out pretty quick and try not to use the car in the interim.

Thanks ikorodu - good to see I'm not alone in the rudest anagram of a town in the country! Must say the grinding noise was much less pronounced today...

But still, I'd like to know a) whether to worry and b) by how much!

a) Yes, until you get it diagnosed. Member here Lates is a good guy to speak to (www.lates600.com)

b) if it's the DMF then they aren't cheap.

YIPPEE - just got the awful noises looked at (listened to?) and it was a heat shield baffle thingy that had lost a bolt; sum total of half an hour on the ramp and £0.00 inc VAT.

I'm a very happy chappy - now, does any one know a good ear specialist to get my hearing checked?

Thanks - it's great to feel that sense of spiritual kinship in a club like this, it's better than when I was in the Triumph Sports Six Club... but then, the cars attract more gentlemanly custodians!

Hi Keithus. We were in the TSSC for years (until I sold the trusty Spitfire in '96). Did you go to the monthly meets at Farndon?

PS. I've always been a Gentlemanly driver! The 1500 Spitfire wasn't what you'd call fast.....

I must admit I only attended a couple of meets near Swindon. Re gentlemanly drivers; I was not meaning to be rude, mearly raising the point from past experience - any ho, a Spitfire 1500 eh? That engine could be persuaded to perform, or was it the terror I experienced of either the passenger door opening at 80mph in my Herald, or the wind blowing thrrough the non existant foot well of my Dolly 1500SE? ;)

Dolly 1500, now that WAS a car! My first card was a Toledo, but I used to llust after the Dolly with its twin headlights, posh seats, rev counter etc etc :drool4:

I know what you mean about the Herald - I had a cheap one once to teach SWMBO to drive, and the rear bumper fell off on the Nottingham ring road!

To me the 75 is a good replacement for those old Triumphs, but without the need for rust-eater....Glad to hear your noises were nothing serious :)
