Has any one had this minor! problem?

Rover 75 tourer diesel mk1
Runs an absolute dream but have noticed on 2 occasions that if the fuel level drops on the gauge to between 1/4 and empty the car does not start straight away (has to crank a few times) even when it shows that there are 127 miles left to go on the computer.

Normaly I dont let the tank go below 1/4

This time however after I had put fuel in and started it it did not want to rev up but after a few seconds it was back to normal.

It now starts up as normal,I am reluctant to let the fuel go any lower to see what happens in case it wont start again!!!!

If you search the threads on the forum, you'll find that bad starting in diesels with a low fuel level are displaying pump fatigue. Sooner or later the pump/pumps will let you down.
If you tell us the year of registration, I'm sure the oil men will tell you what to do.

Hi the car is an 02 plate (2002) with 68121 miles on the clock I will restate that this has only happened twice before when the fuel level has gone between 1/4 and empty all other times it starts perfectly and runs perfectly IE have just returned from France Having done 3K miles with no probs at all:shrug:

It's likely the in-tank fuel pump has failed, at least intermittently. Lift the rear seat on the left side and listen for the whine after the ignition key is turned. If you don't replace a faulty pump, the under-bonnet one will go under the strain, leaving you stranded and facing an even bigger repair bill.

I agree In Tank Pump either died or on its way out.
Typical Symptom under quarter tank full of diesel, starting failure.
Leaving it will also cause the under bonnet pump to fail as doing all the work.

Hi to all thanks for the info in the previous posts

I have checked the in tank fuel pump and can hear it working when the ignition is on,the under bonnet pump is working as well.Howeverthe under bonnet pump does seem "noisey" I E it seems to be making a buzzy humming noise is this normal? this is with out the engine running.

Thanks in anticipation

The sounds a pump makes give no relieble indication of its performance. From what's been said so far it's 99% certain that one or both pumps are due for replacement. I'd say think about it sooner rather than later. It may not start at all if you leave it too long.
